I think just by Poirier's speed and versatility alone makes him a lock for Team Canada.

One's a 6th overall pick, the other is a 6th round pick.
If he is not playing in the NHL he is a lock.

You also got to take in account of Brent Sutter's philosophy on players... strong hockey sense and defensive awareness which are Monahan's strongest attributes.

Monahan is the best centre available for Canada.

That may be true but Sutter loves him some Frederik Gauthier. Uses him in all situations, 1st PP unit, 1st PK unit these first 2 games. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if someone was keeping track of TOI Gauthier would lead all forwards by a decent margin.

If Canada wants a chance at Gold, we best hope he doesn't play top 6 minutes when it matters.

So Monahan scores two goals in the scrimmage the other day, then follows it up with a goal today. And if I am not mistaken I think he scored in both flames development camp scrimmages also. I know this is an extrememly small sample size, but the one thing Monahan seems to really have is consistency. Its awesome that he seems to be able to bring his game in all different types of situations with different players. Getting pretty stoked about this player!

Any comments from the coaching staff about what they saw from specific players?

So Poirier supposedly has passing skills like Tanguay, but that much speed and an edge to his game.
Nope we aren't underrating this kid at all.

We should've taken the one-dimensional dude who flat out told us he didn't want to play here. Because Bobby Mac has a list.

He was happy about being drafted to the Canucks. It's implied.

Monahan, Poirier >>> Bo Horvat, Hunter Shinkaruk.
Bo's a good prospect for the Nucks, but I mean the guy couldn't even break a PPG in the W, whereas both Poirier and Klimchuk did, and they're 20> picks. I know, I look too heavily into stats sheets at times. But I think it is worth noting.

I think going with poirier over shinkaruk was a smart move for the flames as an ithanization. Shinkaruk is a left winger while poirier is a right winger most of the time. the flames are plenty deep at left wing for the future and present... Plus they already have players with the same qualities as shinkaruk to play that positon (baertschi and gaudreau). In fact, i think the flames would like to leave a spot open for gaudreau next year so that he will prefer to resign with the flames cause he'll know he has a good chance to make the team.

I'm not really one to grammar nazi all over the place but how does something like ithanization just happen? It's not like the keys are close to organization or they sound remotely the same.

I read it to mean 'euthanization' (he's critical of the selection).

Why?
He was great at the U-18's last year playing a very important 2 way game for Canada, has been praised for his two way game in Junior and was a high pick last year so obviously has some talent.
I doubt he would be the top center or guy relied upon for offense but looking at how young and inexperienced the roster is I see no reason he can't make it as the 2nd line center or a guy that is the shutdown guy and gets a ton of minutes playing against the top players on other teams and PK.
Not sure how many other centers would be better options playing in key situations than him, especially with about 0 chance that MacKinnon is on the team.

I don't really disagree with you, Monahan alone really tips this in favor of the flames but Bo Horvat didn't play in the W, he played in the OHL. And was an integral part to the Knights great year.
