It's also great when you lose it in the house, it will sound a noise even if you left it on vibrate. Helped me find it a bunch of times, including in a snowbank once.

Google just announced an app that will let you track an Android phone. There are third party solutions but this looks like it'll work great.

There's an app called Plan B which basically is for people who've lost their phone and want to trace it/set off alarm. Otherwise there's preventive apps like Cerberus which can do all of the above plus remote lock and wipe.
But still good to hear Google is putting something else out there.

A good friend of mine in Shanghai had his iPhone 4s taken by a girl who lived elsewhere in his apartment complex. He ended up finding it because she was foolish enough to start taking typically Asian-girl pictures of herself (looking as cute as possible with 2 fingers up) which uploaded to the cloud. Unfortunately, by the time he got it back she'd already taken it out to have it made girly cute with customized buttons. The worst part of it is that he lives in a complex with rents well over $2,000/month and when he arrived at her door with security she was standing there with her own iPhone5 as well.
Hope everything goes well for you in getting your phone back from the family.
Also,

Not sure if this is the best, or worst post of the year but this probably tops even calling Bingo a troll. Awesome.

A friend of mine lost her iPhone last weekend. Find My iPhone said it was off the Lingan docks. How it ended up there she doesn't know.
She searched for a few hours to no avail, but did use the app to send a message to the phone telling anyone to find it to contact her via her landline.
Long story short, a little while later she gets a phone call from a number she gets a phone call from a fisherman saying her found her phone.
That app tends to work well.

It works awesome. Between my wife's iPhone and the kids's iPods, we have used it several times now to locate lost devices. The last time my wife had left her phone in the local cinema. We called the theatre once we located it using the app, they found it within minutes, and my wife was able to pick it up the following morning.

Awesome. I had Lookout on my s2 and it sends its location to lookout.com just before it dies or if you ask it to locate your phone. Found mine on a Starbucks that way once
