Pietrangelo looks pretty good after his 9 game stint.

Not only that they did it twice. How did they not burn a year off his entry deal with him playing 9 pro games and 7 playoff ones in 08-09?
Also after playing 8 games with a +2 rating in 08....he was -9 in 9 games in 09. I think in both cases one could suggest he should have went down. Which is fine, it's the notion that no matter what happens he gets 9 games and a trip to junior that I find a bit absurd.

I voted:
"If he's one of the top four centers; he makes the team"
Because it best reflects that the option is open to the Flames. They will want to wait and see how he stacks up in the period leading up to and at the start of the season and make up their minds then. Information is power!
At least, that's what I think they should do :P

I agree.
Absolutes either way are silly in my view. It should be camp, pre-season and the 9 games should determine what happens. I don't like the idea of a decision being made before the season.

I'd say if he is good enough to play on this team, he should play. Being worried about his ELC is stupid cuz it's not like the 2014-2015 Flames are gonna be contenders either.

The effect of burning an ELC year last longer than that. He get off his ELC one year earlier. He becomes eligible for arbitration one year earlier. He becomes UFA one year earlier. I'd hope the Flames get back to contending before he hits UFA.

We don't know what to expect he has yet to play a NHL exhibition game.
He looks like he's NHL ready bit we won't know until he plays a game against real competition. If he's good enough he stays with us, if not juniors not that hard.

Unless he makes the team in a top 9 forward role, I feel that he should be returned to Jr. An 18 year old kid has no business playing 4th line minutes against grown men 20lbs or more heavier than them where his role will be physical. A top 10 pick like Monahan needs time to develop his offensive game at the NHL level, and you won't do that with Tim Jackman and Lance Bouma flanking you on the wings. I don't want to see another Backlund situation where he's stuck in a non-offensive role that doesn't suit his game for the first couple of years of his NHL career.
The makeup of this Flames team gives Monahan a real shot to make the team if he has a strong camp/exhibition and doesn't completely fall on his face in the first 9 games. Seeing as Stajan, Backlund, Knight, Reinhart are his competition as natural centers I feel he could realistically slot in on one of our top 3 lines. The Flames will likely be a team that has to roll three scoring lines fairly evenly as we have no real top end players to stick on a line, so he should see a fair amount of ES ice time with some 2nd unit PP/PK mixed in if he wins a spot.

I think guys like Corban Knight and, to a lesser extent, Max Reinhart could be X factors in all this. If Knight has a camp and shows that he has what it takes to stick with the NHL club, it could make a decision to send Monahan back to junior a lot easier, if there is some teetering going on. Reinhart and Monahan aren't really competing for the same spots to the extent that Knight and Monahan are, but if Reinhart has a good camp, it serves to solidify the center depth for this year which could influence the Monahan decision as well.
If the Flames are comfortable with going with Stajan, Backlund, Knight and Reinhart as their 4 centers, with guys like Byron, Granlund being callup options, and Galliardi and Cammilleri being options at center in a pinch, it could leave the management and coaching staff breathing easier about doing without him for the year.
That of course, depends on Monahan's performance relative to all those guys mentioned above, as well as management's development philosophy.
EDIT: Noticed the post above mine revolves around the same points.

I think he's going to light it up at camp and then request a trade to the Vancouver Grizzlies. In response, Jay Feaster agrees and drives him to East Hastings and leaves him there, where he is later found frolicking around naked, with the Sedins and Johnny Galecki on a Bathsalts fueled bender. 12 hours and 1.4 million in damages later, an elite team of 6 RCMP, who are in full dress uniform, manage to take him down, at which point Sean starts to rap the lyrics to a seemingly improvised and profanity-laced version of Call Me Maybe in front of all the press that turned up to capture the commotion. Video of this new version goes viral and ends up inspiring Carly Rae Jepsen to record a new version of the tune with rap mogul and superstar, Ja Rule, for which Sean will get a writing credit. This song will not only sweep the grammy's (just barely beating out Obama and his spoken word recording of his new tell all book, "Obamarama: I saw the sign") but will also earn the trio a Nobel Prize in Literature and an Oscar for best original song when it is used as the theme for the new X-Men movie.
After he is released from Prison for good behavior, he'll retire to a cottage in Hawaii and comfortably live off the royalties from his Oscar, Grammy and Nobel winning song. He will later be quoted as saying that his time with the Flames, albeit brief, was "fun" and that he enjoyed the Idaho Tacos at the Calgary Stampede.
... At least that's my guess.

The notion of saying right now, at this point, before any games have been played that he will play his 9 and then go back to junior is really strange to me.
I have a hard time seeing the Flames tell Monahan he'll get his 9 and then its back to Ottawa. They'll tell him it's up to him where he ends up.
It will be based on how those 9 games go. Simple as that. He will get a legit shot at making this team full time.
And I think he will stick based on his performance in those 9 games.

If he somehow can play a top 6 role, then keep him up for the season. I don't see him as bottom 6 since I see Knight and a veteran or another centre prospect there. If he's good enough to make the roster out of came, I would give him 9 games then send him down since he would be better served tearing up in juniors and playing high caliber hockey in the WJC.

If he shows to be better than Backlund and Stajan at camp then I hope he sticks with the team. If not, it's logical to send him back to junior for another season.

If he can handle a 2nd line position and not look lost/puts up points, I see no reason to send him down.

I think the most exciting thing about him is that he's talking about being a guy coaches can trust and put out in key situations its not about points with him. It's about being a reliable player and one who takes pride in the not so fun part of the game, winning face offs and playing hard in your own end.
Points will come, if he can play well in our own end I think he stays.
