The worst part about hanging out in downtown Detriot at night is trying to get a taxi to take you back through the tunnel to Windsor where you are likely staying. It is near impossible to find a cab driver that isn't carrying a gun.
The two major questions are, is there a chance of a federal government bailout. Especially considering their mayor is a democrat. Can the United States afford to see a major city go down like this.
How big is the court case going to be here. The fastest way to cut spending in a city with very few remaining services is to cut wages, cut jobs and to cut the existing pensions. There's no way the people with pensions don't file a lawsuit over this.
The only other way to generate revenue is to massively increase taxation. But with over half of its population gone and 78,000 buildings abandoned do you double? triple? tax rates. Start charging pay as you go services, where cops ask for your credit card when they get to your house?
I haven't followed the story closely, but Detroit shrinking down to 700,000 people is shockingly grim. After the announcement yesterday how many more people leave?
Apparently there's been talk of a federal bailout but it hasn't gained much traction and seems unlikely. The major pensions have already filed suit but the talk I heard this morning was that the general consensus was that their cases wouldn't be very successful. There's definitely going to be a lot of litigation surrounding this, and it will have some major impacts on the way municipalities do business going forward. If the decisions shake confidence in the basic concept of cities funding through the issuance of general obligation bonds it will completely change the way that every city in the country operates going forward.

Just stay in Greektown next time, it's like a pocket of relative safety in the midst of an apocalyptic movie set.

Yeah they're only about 60% as bad as Minneapolis.
Weird place to be the Rape Capital Of America.
I imagine it has something to do with the fact that, when your population goes from 1.8M to south of 700K, the pickings can get kind of slim.
You would think that the lack of options would drive more Detroiters (Detroitans? Detroitanians? Detainees?) to rape, but that doesnt seem to be how the fine, somewhat picky, citizens remaining residents, of Detroit roll.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Sell sections of the wrecked and abandoned areas to Hollywood film studios to film movies like Sharknado and I am legend, also let them run reality shows where the contestants have to camp in the worst crime areas and survive.
They'd make their money back in no time.
Or build a wall around it and put every prisoner in the States in Detoit.
Just don't let the Presdient's plane fly anywhere near the place.

Funny you should say that. Last time I was at a concert at the Fillmore the taxi driver was more than happy to take us all the way through the tunnel (we were originally going to catch the tunnel bus). We did get a little worried however when the border guard knew our cabbie, asked him what he knew him for, because he had "questioned" him before and it turned out the cabbie had been in trouble for polygamy - LOL. He was waved through, thank goodness, but we had a good laugh about that one.

Seeing as it's largely made up of privately owned businesses, no. Declaring bankruptcy also will change very little about how things operate in Detroit today compared to a week ago.

If anyone does go to Detroit i highly recommend the Detroit Institute of Arts, one the largest art collections in the US.
If anyone is a fan of Art they have Van Gogh, Degas, Cezanne, Monet the list of Artist's is endless. Pretty much any significant American artist is displayed. This museum is full of priceless art over 60, 000 pieces in their collection it was truly amazing.
Detroit Zoo it is just north of Downtown one the oldest Zoos in the US and the animal habitats are really well done it is well worth seeing honestly we thought it was better than the Calgary Zoo.
In near by suburb Dearborn the Henry Ford museum is outstanding. It features so many items way beyond Cars and there is a large Aviation collection as well. It is more like a general American History Museum.
I agree there are many of the neighbor hoods i would not venture into but there are some real quality finds in Detroit if you like Historical sites and museums.
As for this Detroit filing for bankruptcy i can't even imagine how this whole process will go and what is historically protected. I have never heard of a city claiming bankruptcy in the US or Canada before what a mess all the pension's and city the 1000's of city employee's how in the world will that be carried out?
