I've been to Detroit. It's like God took a dump on a parking lot.

Its a symptom of globalization, and what the US has become.

There are very few areas downtown Detroit that are decent, the area around Comerica, Ford Field, Greek Town and the Casinos. It is a huge shame because it was once a truly beautiful, vibrant city. I never feel truly safe there, which sucks because living in the Windsor area, Detroit is the only choice for music and sports entertainment.

Hamilton isn't nearby Detroit. It is nearby Buffalo.

OK Detroit is the biggest but it's beyond me how a large city with tax payers can't keep it looking decent.
This is the problem. The tax base moved away.

Detroit police take almost an hour to respond to calls, compared to a national average of 11 minutes, and that 40% of street lights in the city are turned off.

I guess it depends on what you mean by nearby. It's a couple of hours away, but I'd consider it the same region.

I'm a little surprised to see people taking a dump all over Buffalo. It's actually a really quick way to spot people who've actually visited the city and those who've passed thru it. Buffalo isn't exactly London or Paris but it's hardly Edmonton either.

Yes a new arena is being built across the corner from Comerica.

So I am thinking that there is no new arena announcement coming in the next week or so?

I'm sure everything would be peachy if they were just amalgamated.

Easier said than done.

I mean, we don't even technically border any of those towns/cities. Edmonton on the other hand shares a border with St Albert, Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park (and almost Nisku/Leduc) and still can't manage to annex them.

With a blitzkrieg or something? You don't just "take over" other municipalities. I'm sure Detroit would have loved to have amalgamated the cities to its north and west, but it's not that simple.

Why would Calgary want those cities?

Not necessary because Calgary is not losing population to the neighboring communities.

Besides, the operating cost of such a larger city would be pretty horrific on the available property tax base. You wouldn't be simply annexing those communities, you also have to annex all the area in between.
