Wonder what his thoughts are now, at least we got a 1st rounder & prospects for Iggy.

Ottawa was in the playoff race
Calgary was not
Two completely different situations, hard to compare what Alfie would of done if Ottawa was completely out of the race.
Can we not turn this into an Alfie vs Iggy thread?

...shouldn't that make the situation worse? He left a playoff team that won a series last year.
Detroit won't be doing much for a while.

No thanks. I'm liking the fact that the country club is being purged. Don't need the club champ coming back to take on all challengers again. Time for fresh blood and a new direction. I hope he enjoys which ever of the other 28 clubs he manages to talk into signing him. There's no place for Iginla in Calgary anymore.

The Senators had told Alfredsson to fill in "the blank cheque." He opted to move on. Called Bryan Murray last night. #Sens #ottnews

Oh I agree, I'm purely comparing it to that deadline thread. It really P'd me off at the time, which is why the news this morning has me giggling like a schoolgirl. Just remember Leahy, what goes around is all around!

Why Detroit though? They are going nowhere fast.

As per @DarrenDreger, Wings deal has been agreed upon with Alfredsson, one year, $5.5 M (including $2 M in bonuses)

Maybe he figures that while Detroit was getting beat up in a tougher division in the Western Conference last year, they will now have it pretty easy in the East.
Gotta keep in mind that the Red Wings were pretty close to upsetting the eventual cup champs.

They were also quite close to missing the dance entirely, and their core is now another year older.

Have we learned nothing from the last 20+ years? NEVER count out Detroit. As long as Holland is at the helm, they are always in contention. Alfie very well might have pushed them over the hump last season. Old core or not, even an aging Alfredsson makes them better IMO.

Aren't they exact opposites?
Sundin wanted to stay in Toronto, refused to waive his NTC.
Alfredsson was given a blank cheque to stay in Ottawa but didn't.

I'm a Sens fans, and this one has me puzzled. I had no issue with him leaving for Boston, for the best chance to win the Cup. But Detroit?
All I can figure is that it's related to Sochi. Looking to build chemistry with Zetterberg, Franzen & Kronwall to give Sweden a legitimate shot at gold? But is that more important than winning the Cup?

Ya but why the move now? Sens still look good for the playoffs next year. Plus a healthy Karlsson and Spezza. Why go to Detroit now when Senators have just as equal a chance for the cup if not better than Detroit. Makes Alfredsson look bad in my books, and I'm not even a Sens fan.
