Plus it gave him the ability to write his own deal and go where he wanted to go.

Meh, they'll just end up wasting it by overpaying UFA's tomorrow anyway.

I still think Nill was drunk when he did the deal. Horcoff is terrible.

Yeah this still seems weird. Guess Nill sees something nobody else does.

Yes hahahahaha!
No more suckcoff.
New captain. New change in player personnel.
Hopefully Hemsky is shipped off next.
And more importantly, need to find a new whipping boy as my avatar.

The fact that he looks like the troll from the Goonies and Nill could be a fan of the movie.
Maybe he'll trade for a fat kid next.
Or bring Tony Amonte out of retirement.

I don't think trading an overpaid player for virtually nothing is the bellweather test for competence. Especially compared to how much he was apparently willing to overpay for Schneider.

I suspect the Oilers will now move some prospects for Braydon Coburn or sign Andrew Ference.

The contract is terrible, not the player. There's a difference.
Kevin Lowe is terrible.

MacT might actually turn the ship around in Edmonton...

As a result of the freed up cap space I fully expect the Oilers will swing big on Clarkson. He's what they need but it'll be another contract they'll regret within 3 years if he accepts.

Horcoff isn't all that bad guys. He wasn't worth his money (should come at about half the cost), and he did play for the Oil which made him a loser, but at the same time he can skate and he can definitely take a beating. Dallas needed a couple guys like him to play on their lower lines. Nill could've gotten a player like him elsewhere, but it would've cost more than a 7th rounder.
MacTavish is going to be a solid hire for Edmonton - he intelligent and speaks to the point without being a condescending dick. Can't say the rest about their management.

Horcoff's game left him a long time ago. He became a pretty lazy looking player over the last couple of years, and his offense is pretty much gone.
I don't know what Dallas was thinking, but fill my pipe with more crack comes to mind.

I hope the Oilers sign Boyd Gordon to take Horcoff's 3rd line center spot.
I think Dallas wants Horcoff to take Seguin under his wing. Horcoff did the same to Hall/Eberle when they came into the league. Seguin has questionable work ethic and Horcoff's game has declined but nobody works harder then he does.

I don't think this deal is that bad, liamenator.
I don't think Horcoff is great, but I think for a team that needed competent centres, Nil really went out and got them.
Horcoff's cap hit is high and based on his play last year and the year prior, he's probably not a 3.5 million dollar player, the average payout per year on the last two years of his deal. Another poster mentioned it, Dallas won't be a cap team anyway, so the relative cap hit is less important, especially because the deal is so short.
They got a decent bottom 6/top 9 (however you want to phrase it) centre for reasonable term and a dollar overpayment without touching the roster or significant picks. It's a short term acquisition with specific goals in mind for nearly acquisition cost free. Veteran presence without anchoring the team.
Larsen would've cost the Dallas organization over a million bucks this year to potentially play in the minors, and then have to qualify him a year from now.
Based on the moves made today, I would say Nil and his team have finished their organizational review, and did not place much value on these prospects.

Dallas gets a gritty 3rd line center & great PKer & Oilers get a defensive project, lose Horcoffs cap hit, & open up another center position for Wiess or Grabovski. Sounds all right for both teams really.
