For some reason when I was first checking out his reviews (and size) this image popped into my head. 6'7" and 235 lbs?!!?, if those numbers are correct.
Matty and Red John both post pretty scathing reviews of the kid, but Evman posts a fairly fluffy one and gets all the thanks.
I guess some people only hear what they want to hear. Hope the pick works, but I won't hold out hope.
It's somewhere in the middle. My friend has 4 STS, so i make it to a lot of games and Evman' review might be tainted that he seems to know Keegan.
Just to temper a bit on his review:
"OK puck skills"... sorry but they are well below average.
"decent first pass" .... he can get it to the forwards if they are in close range. Maybe me, but his descreption makes it sound like stretch passes.
" made the right plays more often than not" ...sure he batts well over .500, but so does Butler.
" found myself hoping he was on the ice in tight situations" ... probably the best shutdown guy on the team. That said, the Royals D has to be lower tier in the league, and there really is no other options.
He was bang on about the progression that Kanzig took from last year to this year. It's probably the biggest reason that he is fan favourite ( at least with me and my buddies) and i would presume the scouts that saw that progression went "wow".
Someone in another thread asked me if he was a "diamond in the rough" and i said no. The more i think about it, i think he is a "diamond in the rough". Not to say that he is going to be a top 4 d-man, but if he really works hard on his skating he could be a bottom pairing, shutdown player, that other teams hate.
The 3rd round was a bit of a reach for him, but the "Red John" review made it seem like he should not have even been drafted. He deserved to be drafted and hopefully the local "Royal" makes it to the bigs one day.

Not trying to be a downer but in what world does he sound like a better Regehr?
Yeah, Regehr would be an absolutely home run. If this kid has a career that is anywhere close to being compared to Robyn (apart from talking about goal scoring ability), I think it would be a success.
I don't know much about him besides what Iv'e read, but this is the only pick that in the draft that feels like a real head-scratcher. Just doesn't seem like there's a lot of potential here....at least not for a 3rd round pick in a supposedly deep draft.

I have a question : Was this draft deep after the top 60?
This year after the 3rd round i really didn't know many of the names being called. Last year in a crap draft for high end talent, i recognized a lot of the players that were drafted from the 4th round on. I knew who Culkin was and same with Gordon.
Granted i don't watch religiously after the 2nd round and just turn up the volume on the tv in case the flames are up or i hear a name that i know.
I live in Victoria and see a lot of live Royals games. Kanzig is one player I have been watching very closely over the last couple years. He is mean. He plays with the edge. After a whistle blows to stop a play, if the puck is near his goalie, you dont want to be. If his team mate is getting targeted, he wont go and take a stupid penalty from being a 3rd man, he waits for a chance to make you pay for it during a play. And he makes them pay.
His skating is not as bad as some are making it out to be. Its not like he gets blown by. He knows how to play positionally to not get beat by the speedsters.
Does he have room for improvement, absolutely. But has he maxed out on his development? No way! Kanzig has a very high ceiling and I truly believe he has the smarts, size and athleticism to make it happen.
Kanzig is a leader. If he makes the NHL, the sky is the limit for this kid. At minimum I see this guy being a bottom 6 guy who can play bottom 4.
He will need time in the AHL tho to get used to hitting men and establish himself as a beast to be aware of.

Absolutely not. I know many Nucks fans who follow CHL/WHL very closely who really wanted this guy. I have been looking forward to seeing who drafts him for months. I cannot believe the Flames were lucky enough to pick him.
There were always scouts at the Royals games watching him very closely and always a buzz in the lounge about him when scouts were getting a pint.

We picked up three guys in the first, we can gamble on a massive, mean player to defend our youngins with a 3rd
I truly believe Kanzig makes the NHL. He is going to be integral in protecting our goalies of the future.

First year, young big kid, pretty garbage, but you could tell the potential was there. This year, WAY better, made a decent first pass, and made the right plays more often than not. Earlier in the year I thought he'd go 60-90.
Kanzig is not defined by his toughness - he is NOT a goon. He is a hockey player first and foremost. He has a reputation as a tough guy because of how he destroys guys, but that is not his main game. He is a shutdown guy, with OK puck skills, and great leadership abilities.
I hated having him on the ice in year one, but by the next year I found myself hoping he was on the ice in tight situations.
Full disclosure: One of my best friends works with Keegan at Bear Mountain. Plus I love the guy and wish the best for him.
This review is very accurate. He has the potential to learn how to get his shot off, but that is not the priority with this guy. He is a shutdown D man who mean and makes opposing guys think twice about driving hard to the net.
Ive seen both Albethieser (sp?) out of Halifax this year a couple times, and seen Kanzig a lot. I would rather have Kanzig in all honesty.

Glad to hear some Victoria fans who saw more of him comment on the progression they saw in his game. Regardless of our perception of the pick day of the draft I think anybody who is a Flames fan is hoping his ceiling is high and pulling for him to become a big mean beast of a player at the NHL level now that he's part of the tribe.
He is big with limited upside but very defensive. He's mean and guys don't like playing against him. Sounds like Reghrt to me.
I hope this kid has a future with the flames. Having a huge tough defensemen would be great
Or maybe a Doug Murray?
