Not at all interested in being drafted by a NHL hockey team and then being signed to a multi million dollar entry level deal that will put him in a much better position financially than 99% of the rest of the country, not to mention the whole living the dream being able to play hockey?

I get being a fan of a certain team, but tons of players have been picked by teams they never cheered for growing up.

I really have no idea why posters wanted Shinkaruk other than he was from Calgary?

He is a soft floater. Did we not just witness what a bunch of floaters can do to a team? I never want to see another floater drafted, traded for, or picked up as UFA, on this team again.

Other than Fucale, Shinkaruk was the last guy i wanted the flames to draft at #22.

While Poirier's regular season totals, on a horrific Gatineau team, were nothing to scoff at, he turned it on in the postseason, recording 10 points in 10 games (including six goals), and more importantly, recording 39 shots on net.

There are certainly safer picks in the draft than the Montreal native, and scouts' opinions of him vary greatly, some seeing him as more of a playmaker with a physical edge, and some thinking he can translate into a power forward. One thing is for sure and that is that Poirier improved significantly the second half of the season. His wrist shot is now more of a threat, he is more intelligently using his teammates for zone entry, and has gained a greater physical presence. An added bonus is that Poirier is a willing shot-blocker, and a solid defensive presence, having at times been deployed on the penalty kill. Another bonus is that Poirier has a knack for finding himself on breakaways, which is a combination of good awareness and decision-making as well as good skating. He also has the skill to put them away, although likely not at the same rate in the NHL.

Sounds like Montreal all but had this guy wrapped up with the 25th pick. Love the move to sneak in and grab him.

I wouldn't call Shinkaruk a soft floater but he doesn't play a big game at all, he's a sniper but he's also only 5'10 and not extremely fast either which is not what calgary needs right now.

We spent months at CP looking at the possibilities and all the mock drafts and this kid was somewhat anonymous. I don't believe anyone here had him as a possibility and it sound like he was on at least two teams radar that we knew of that would take him. Hoping Flames and Habs scouts are on to something here.

One of the biggest differences between Poirier and Shinkaruk that nobody is talking about... Shinkaruk's production actually declined last year. That's a big red flag for draft eligible players. The last highly regarded CHL player to regress in his draft year was Angelo Esposito, who also fell dramatically and busted huge.

Isn't Hunter a bit lazy? Very talented, but little drive and not a team player. Forget what the interviews say. Use to watch him play minor hockey. Granted, that was a long time ago, but still...does human character ever really change? He also lives in elbow park, and since many of those in the flames network also live in the area - Vernon and Peplinkski come to mind...well if they saw what we saw, then there's a very good reason he fell in the draft.

Remember when he use to have gold skates? That in and of itself would raise flags in my opinion.

As was stated in the RedLine report, he wouldn't have been there at 28. Montreal would have taken him at 25.
