Interesting that he is primarily a right winger (his off-wing). He looked good coming down that side though. Good speed and good puck possession.

Stats last year are pretty comparable.

Shinkaruk:
37 goals 86 points

Poirier:
32 goals 70 points

Shinkaruk played in the WHL with the Tigers who had 243 goals for. Poirier played in the QMJHL for Gatineau who had 220. Poirier was 1st in scoring on his team, with the next highest player having 54 points. Shinkaruk was second in scoring on his team and played on a team with a guy who had 91 points and another that had 75.

Those look like pretty comparable numbers. And the bigger question is how will those numbers translate into the NHL. Poirier is the bigger grittier player. Not taking the hometown guy is dissapointing. But saying they are in different statistical categories is hyperbole.

I remember all those mock drafts that were posted here and one of them, at some point like a month or two ago, had us take Emile Poirier with the PIT pick and everyone in that thread just went "lol who" and "he won't be a 1st rounder". Kind of funny that we really took him in the first round now.

At first I was like "noooo, WTF?", but I like the pick more and more the more I read about the kid ... if he can really play RW then even better. It was maybe a bit off the board but he fits a lot of criteria and actually seemed to have a really good season. We'll see how he develops. I'm a bit more excited about Klimchuk though.

I like this pick. Big kid (TSN said he was 6'1".5 on his way up to the podium), gritty, and people rave about his skating. Good player in all 3 zones too.

Klimchuk Comparables (used as a stand-in for Poirier, they didn't look at him, but Klumchuk's numbers are similar to Poirier's so his comparables are about the same)

Shinkaruk Comparables

Chances of getting a decent player are higher for someone with Shinkaruk's draft year production than someone with Klimchuk's/Poirier's. (Well, duh!)

I'm showing my age here, but this kid makes me think of Paul Ranheim.
Except Ranheim was not a finisher((((

He was until he got to the NHL. 36 goals in 44 games his senior year at U of Wisconsin, 68 goals in 75 games for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles. Apparently his hands were checked luggage on his flight to Calgary, and were never found again.

Here's a quote from one of the mock drafts in the Redline Draft Guide

"25. Montreal — Emile Poirier. Hear that? It’s the sound of fervent praying as the Habs try to subconsciously will the rest of the league into staying away from this hometown Montreal stud. If they land him at #25, mark our words — it will be the biggest steal of the draft."

I haven't even looked at the kid's statline pal. I watched the vid and made an observation.

Best way I have heard Ranheim's inability to score yet.

Comparing based on points alone is pretty ridiculous. You're only looking at one aspect of the game. If you start to compare players chosen late 1st round based on size and their relative success, then Poirier is the clear winner. In the 20-30 range, this year, all the players are incomplete. Neither Shinkaruk or Poirier are complete players at this time. Poirier brings size, grit, etc.. Shinkaruk had slightly more points.

Obviously, you could have gone for either one, but Shinkaruk was, in no way, the clear choice.

Look at that first goal at about the 15 second mark. Isn't that almost the same deke that Fleury used when he scored his final goal as a Flame in the shootout?

Yep, it's pretty clear why the Flames took him at 22, they were quite sure Montreal would have at 25.

I like it. This is our Nichushkin 8). That speed is mind blowing. Shifty too. Looks like a sweet shot too.
