I could definitely get behind Gaudreau and our sixth for Seguin. He's already proved himself on the NHL-level and has his best years ahead of him.

If additional players are involved Feaster better tread carefully and make sure that he's not getting hosed.

It would certainly cost more to acquire Seguin than just 6th + Gaudreau.

Would Florida trade 2nd for 6th + Gaudreau? That is likely how Boston would view it.

Whatever deal is on the table, I would want the Flames to wait until Jones, MacKinnon, Drouin as well Barkov to be taken. I think all their respective values would be very close to Seguin's in a couple of years' time, much less adding additional 1st(s) and/or prospects. I don't think any of the 4 are going to drop, but it is the kind of move you just have to wait until it is your pick to really see the full value first.

I love Seguin, and really think as a #1 C playing on a team that opens it up a bit, he would thrive. I would just prefer the Flames hold off and wait to see who is available at that pick first. I really think Barkov will become an elite center in all zones.

Todd Button was the on the radio Friday talking about how the top end is deeper than they initially thought. He said instead of being 4-6 players deep they think it is more like 8-9 players deep. "The depth never ceases to amaze me." Deep into the second and maybe third.

Sounds like they're pretty comfortable at #6 if they don't move up. I wonder if a trade down with Buffalo at #8 is a secondary possibility if their list is really 8-9 deep at the top end. #8 + #16 for #6 and ???.

I somehow really doubt that the Elite group/tier of players (that would go top 3 in a typical drat) this year extends to 8 or 9.

If we're looking back on this in 5 years and this draft (like '03) tells us otherwise, then well, my bad. But I'm quite comfortably certain that the group of Monahan, Lindholm, Nurse, Ristolainen, Shinkaruk, Horvat and Domis, are not top 2-3 quality in a normal year. A couple could turn out to be. But not that many, I don't think.

But regardless, after 5, they've got to pause and decide whether their choices at that position are more or less desirable to them than bringing in a likely already number one center in Seguin. Either way, will be a huge decision.

After sleeping on it, I don't like the rumoured trade.

Sure, Seguin is the best player in the trade, but there are 3 things that bother me:

1) hip concerns
2) we give up 5 years of ELCs
3) it illustrates that there is no rebuild. With Seguin here, Feaster and co will go hard in free agency for guys like Horton. Flames become a 9th, 10th place team trying to build through free agency again.

Would rather keep acquiring free assets (and ELCs) for the next 2 or 3 years

Not only the injury concerns you are giving up a possible center winger combo for a guy that plays the WING.

Plus Johnny and #6 could out produce seguin.

I wouldn't trade anything more then a draft pick for him.

The flames would have 3 strong building blocks for the future (Tyler, Sven, TJ) plus 2 1st round picks in this draft. Johnny is still boom-bust so I like the deal as rumored

Im thinking that too, don't want to see the Flames deal any of these young assets and picks that will do more for us in the long run.

The only way I would agree with a Gaudreau + 6th for Seguin trade is if Jay had a trade lined up/complete for that 5th that Carolina is reportedly dealing.

28th + 22nd + Granlund + Gio

For

McBain + 5th

Then

Gaudreau + 6th

for

Seguin + 120th

Draft Nichushkin

Baertschi - Seguin - Nichushkin

That's line has elite potential and while we do lose some pieces we gain some as well and we keep the rebuild/youth movement going strong.

Acquiring Seguin doesn't negate the rebuild and has no implication of what they would do in free agency. Total assumption on your part.

He's 21 years old. The only difference between him and a high end draft pick is a couple years and proven in the NHL. You're very, very lucky if a #6 pick turns out anything like him. Perhaps in a way, it's Feaster and Co. trying to cut corners, but in this case you have to consider it.

Really don't see him being locked up for 5 years as a big issue if he ends up being that first line forward that puts this team on his back while we fill in the rest of the core.

Just make sure you keep the team away from his hip Feaster.

If you can get Seguin for 6 + Gaudreau you take it. He was buried behind depth on Boston but has done very well with limited ice time. I think he is about to break out and would be a very nice fit on the Flames.

I too have slept on this and I can't decide.

Do the hip injuries and any long term limitations affect seguin? This deal has to be about the long term benefit for the flames.

Will gaudreau willingly sign with the flames if he can opt out in a year or two? Is he worth his peak today?

I might be more inclined to trade the bottom 2 picks and not 6, but I doubt Boston would do that which is the point.

On the other hand we might get a franchise 1c signed to a contract to build around. I just can't tell if it is the center taken at 6, seguin, or the high pick I expect we will make next year.

They only do the podium thing during the first round. Even if they do full coverage on TSN today they'll do the rest of the picks from the tables.

If his hip was really an ongoing problem, i'd be hard pressed to find what effect it's had on his play in the league to this point. Unless 29 goals / 67 pts and 16 goals in the shortened season while buried on a powerhouse team in just his first few seasons somehow demonstrates that it's a detriment to his game..

And despite a lack of output in these playoffs, he stuck out a lot in the finals. Definitely didn't slip into the shadows when things were on the line in that series. Funny how I was thinking while watching that series just how lucky the Bruins were to an upcoming skilled guy like him on their already stacked team.

Only 1 goal in the playoffs though, he did have 7 assists too and some big ones in the finals. I don't know though.

Only one goal, but he wasn't playing in the top 6. At times, he was on the 4th line.
