If I understand the gist of the Boston Globe article sited in a couple of these threads, they are pretty much faced with trading one of Lucic, Marchand or Seguin, and I guess they feel they can't do without Lucic and Marchand, particularly in the playoffs. Still, it smells to me, "chronic hip" smells...

I've heard a few Bruins fans say they'd want Peverly to be included in the deal, makes sense since he's been rumored to the Flames in the past. I'd have no problem taking him with Seguin even if he is slightly overpaid. Decent enough player who can be moved for an asset at the deadline.

Yeah but you're forgetting something there, it's Seguin vs 2.5 + Monahan + Gaudreau + Kelly

Realllly don't care about the Bruins' cap issues.
Point here is.. he's on the block, and Feaster might actually pull off something applaud-worthy that doesn't end with Flames fans retreating with our tails between our legs. Does hell really freeze over tomorrow?.. I guess we shall see.

Ok, according to capgeek, I just signed Rask to a 7M deal, and got rid of Kelly. I then removed Savard from the equation as well. I then recalled Subban to be my backup goalie.
I now have 4.5M in cap space to sign one 3rd liner and one 4th liner, respectively. What am I missing here? Bergeron's raise doesn't kick in until the following season, when the cap will rise to compensate for it.

Sure, but the cap is only going to go up from here on out. This next season is simply a stipulation built-in to the CBA, afterwards, it will follow HRR, as always.
It just feels too easy for them to give up on Seguin when there are other routes they could take. I can't be the only one who feels this way. Or maybe I'm just in uber conspiracy mode and refuse to admit it.

Conspiracy mode is my bet. And it's natural to find the negatives in such a big deal as this. I did it yesterday with Monahan and his Lame interviews.

As a guess... Shawn Thornton somewhere other than the 4th line.

Also interesting.... Seguin's hip "condition" has been known about since 2011, at least. ESPN article from October 2011 discusses it at length.

With all the abbreviations I was curious who Flip 8 was for a second.

Danger! Danger!
This is the classic Feaster trap. Don't swing for the fences with one sexy deal. This deal would be bad news. Perron may be available as well as Clutterbuck. Put these two into your line-up through reasonable combinations of draft (maybe lose one of your later picks in round 1 like 22 or 28) and throw Johnny Hockey out there and get these two WITHOUT losing #6. Bruins are baiting you Jay. Would you rather have Monaghan , Perron, Clutterbuck and still have a late first round pick or would you prefer a high risk game of chance with the Bruins? I am OK with any trade involving Johnny Hockey only because I don't think he is coming here anyway! The "Aw shucks! I just want to play one more year with my little brother" ain't cutting it with me. He is an enomormous flight risk.
You have it right Jay! Stay on task. Get younger and tougher at the same time. I like the deal with Colorado and these guys would start to build the right kind of team to complete.

Depending on who they're trading to get at 16 that they think won't be around at 22 to make that deal in the first place. Risto, Gauthier, Mantha? Imo picks 10-30 will be so mish mashy and unpredictable.
But the Boston trade, yeah Pev and Kolk added would be cool with me.

I think there's significantly less of a game of "chance" with Seguin, as opposed to a #6 pick yet to even put on an NHL uniform.
The only thing making me hesitant about the deal is my desire to see Gaudreau become a big shot with the Flames in the future. (but admittedly may not happen anyways..)
We can add as many secondary pieces as we want. We've done that for years now, patching the ship with band-aids that were supposed to bring an extra 20 goals. It's never elevated the team because the team never had a solid, young core of true 1st line, franchise type players. Seguin would become just that if acquired by the Flames. We need our core before we go out and add Perrons and Clutterbucks. I really, honestly, believe this. You've gotta get the truly hard to get pieces first. Then you can flip for all the support cast guys you want.

If nothing else, this should make draft day fun, especially if Bettman announces a non-Flames relevant trade before they pick #6

I understand your point and I have no fear of the Flames dumping Gaudreau whatsoever. So if the deal is just Johnny and 6 for Seguin I could go for it but if it involves losing a character guy like Glencross or Gio as well and the Bruins throwing back Peverely at us then I think we are being taken.

That's fair to think. But keep in mind Gio and Glencross are 30, and will probably only be relevant to the team for the duration of this rebuilding phase.
I'm just talking with the assumption that the deal is 6th + J.G for Seguin. Not really considering additional pieces involved. But if it ends up being that way (players like peverly, flames roster players involved) then that's going to be a hell of a blockbuster, probably the "J. Staal" of this draft, in terms of significance.
Imo the smartest move, and this was posted on twitter tonight, is if the Flames wait until the top 5 picks are done and re-evaluate at that point. If the 'elite tier' forwards (by their standards/scouting) have all been snatched up, then go back to Boston and make the offer again.

If MacKinnon, Jones, Drouin, Barkov and Nichuskin go in the top 5 then Feast'r'Famine will have a serious decision to make if the offer really is #6 and Johhnny Hockey for Seguin.
Short term gives Calgary a step in the right direction and a player they can build around. Long term who knows how Lindholm/Monahan turn out and if Jonny Hockey ever signs with Calgary yet alone what type of success he will have at the NHL level.
Tough call in that scenario but I say do it.
