At the time we really could of used Brad Richards. For all we know he could of been lights out with Tanguay and Iginla

Feaster was trying to land Brad Richards. Should we of just kept Regehr till the trade deadline and hope someone would of tossed us two seconds?

Imagine my shock when the same posters who seemingly hate everything that happens Flames related, hate this trade.

Also, what is with all doom and gloom whining about this trade? People are acting like we traded our first rounder for Jones and SOB instead of a guy we didn't need or want anymore with limited trade destinations.
|
Why am I complaining? Because a trade like this just shows me how out of touch our management is with reality. It's like they don't even see what other players get in return or what other managers are doing. We undervalue our own assets and overvalue that of other teamss... that's not how managers should operate.
We apparently want to get big and tough, but we take on 2 brutal players and their brutal contracts in the process? Why? So when can secure 30th place in the league 3 months sooner?
It's trades like these that worry me. It simply doesn't make sense.

I don't understand why people insist on staying a Flames fan when they hate every single thing this team does. Hurts my brain...

Obviously, what would you rather have? 2 second rounders, or a buyout candidate who is past his prime? Easy answer

It's just such a silly statement and there have been a few who say similar things "I hope the Flames make X horrible draft pick so I can laugh"
Yes, hope for bad choices for our club so you can laugh on a forum for 30 minutes. It's so odd.

3 years. Same term as Tanguay. His deal is no worse than having Tanguay around for 3.5, clearly by the return there was not much interest in him

Tanguay and Sarich have almost the exact same contracts that O`Brien and Jones have
It was a lateral move, really.

At least Sather can blame it on the alzheimer's.
Feaster is just bad. You'd think a lawyer would be halfway decent at negotiating, but he's not. He probably pays sticker price for used cars.
I sincerely hope his tenure ends soon.

David Jones is not a brutal player.

Hindsight is 20/20. Did we expect Richards to become a buyout candidate at the time?

I think he is. You apparently have a different definition I suppose.

Does anyone ever check facts anymore before spewing crap all over the place?
First of all, its three more years, not four. Secondly, calling him a 10 point 3rd liner is no different than me calling him a 27 goal scoring 2nd liner.

The over reaction is silly right now. To the levels that its more entertainment than serious discussion. I hope for the best in whatever they do but really, the end of the world for moving two players that weren't in the plans anymore for something that on paper addresses the teams needs.
I have no hopes for them making a terrible draft pick so I can laugh. Your perception of what they should pick is a narrower spectrum than mine. Makes neither of us right or wrong.

Agreed, Jones has the most potential.
Didn't a lot of people on here want Tanguay bought out anyways? Buy out Tanguay or buyout Jones if he doesn't pan out, what's the difference?

The more I think about this trade, the more I don't mind it. I'm tired of watching our buttery soft team get pushed around. They need some grit and nastiness back in their game. I've already braced for a terrible season next year, but I'll be satisfied as long as the team works, and are hard to play against again.

We took on extra salary, which is unlike what a lot of other rebuilding teams would do, especially when they are trying to dump an 'albatross'. When I think of a rebuilding trade, I think of trading a contract like Tanguay for draft picks or trading Sarich at the deadline for a marginal pick (which he likely would have gotten for us this upcoming deadline). Not really trading off a player at their lowest value.
I actually don't understand what the trade accomplishes. We got younger, yes, but we also got worse in terms of talent, we actually gave up some character in terms of Sarich for a complete doofus in SOB and we took money back.
Is it a bad trade? Not really. Does it help the 'rebuild'? Doubtful, and it might set us back a bit.
|
Salary is a wash, $6 million either way. SOB is on a year longer than Sarich but is on a cheaper deal and will be a better player that anything we could likely get at his cap hit.
The trade accomplishes a couple of things, it moves more of the old guard out, it brings in some hungrier, younger players, it brings in more jam (alot more jam considering Tanguay had none and Sarich was a part time player) and it fills the roster out with warm, competitive bodies.
From a rebuilding team standpoint we needed a couple of things, we needed size and toughness to play alongside alot of the youngsters, Jones and SOB bring that. We bring in a RW which we desperately needed, we have more balance through forward now. We bring in a 6th D who I think will actually be a really good mentor, in the Marchment style. This move was made moreso to build new chemistry on the team, that's why I like it from a rebuilding standpoint.
On salary again, it doesn't matter, the window to contending will open when Jones' contract has wound down. We still need to get to the cap floor as well and I'd rather take on some trades for younger, expensive, reclamation projects that can buy into a rebuilding team mindset than some more journeyman UFAs riding out their last big paycheque. Huge difference.
And Tanguay's contract was also terrible, and he was the definition of "post-apex" not the kind of guy you want for a rebuild.
Should we have trade Tanguay for picks? Maybe. Highly doubtful he brings in anything more than a 2nd rounder and a salary dump coming back if he gets off to a good start. No team would have given anything good for Tanguay. I'd rather the chemistry change that these players bring.
