That's a very simplistic analysis I'd say.

As far as the trade goes, I don't get it. Unless Tanguay was so unhappy here that he had to be moved. We just sent one of our only skilled forwards away for a big body with little talent.
|
Baertschi, Hudler, Cammalleri, Backlund, Stajan...... you tell me more skilled or tough? That is 5 guys that can fill in for Tanguay's minutes... Stempniak makes 6.
The only guy the Flames have close to Jones is Glencross. Not an accident that Colorado was forced to pay him the 4M as a UFA.
He is a commodity... similar to Bourque .... a big guy who can score and bang in the corners. He is liable to be assigned to look after Baertschi and Backlund on the Flames #1 unit.
Sarich was a great team guy but O'Brien is supposed to stand up tor teammates and will still drop the gloves. O'Brien is a Heavy weight in the leagues and Sarich was only considered a Heavy weight because he played so big relative to the rest of the Flames.

Still not sure what to make of this trade. I like Jones, not huge on O'Brien, though. But I like the youth movement at least. Tangs to the Avs was fairly predictable, if he was going to go anywhere.
What did people think Tanguay and Sarich would each land us though anyways?
2nd + meh prospect for Tanguay and likely a 4th-5th for Sarich.
So looking at it that way, this isn't bad. It's definitely not ground breaking. The only thing I would have hoped for, since Tanguay is offensively the best player in the trade, that we'd get a pick as well for a little compensation in that regard. I'm surprised we were even able to find a suitor for Tanguay, so in that regard.. Not bad, Feaster.
Anyways, those are my thoughts to this point.

Man the overreaction on this board is starting to become unbearable.
I get it, we are entering a re-build, we suck.. blah..blah.. blah..
Objectively, it's a fair deal. I think it can still work out for both teams. I am actually surprised they actually got anything for Tanguay.
The hyperboles are ridiculous - ie. since when is O'Brien the "worst defenseman in the NHL". I think Sarich is worse IMO.

Tanguays play went bad well before the trade deadline. He took floating to another level the second that he and Iggy were split up.

Ask any Av's fan. Sacco went full born ###### last year.
He was never a good coach, he had better talent around him when he was successful.
He was a disaster movie last year.

Bottom line, still not a win. You can argue that we didn't lose this trade, you can argue that we came out even. But there is no way this is a win! So Feaster can have his press conference. Talk about how he targeted these players. Spit out a new buzzword or phrase. And keep spinning our wheels.

Anyone else feel this is a trade that could have been built around Stastny? Some more sweetening on the Flames' end, but Tanguay still included. We strengthen their wing, and they strengthen us down the middle.
Seeing as it's more likely than not that MacKinnon is going to the Avs and all..

Jones is a effort guy, he's fairly fast, physical, drives to the net kills penalty and outside of last year has shown a good wrist shot and nice hands in close.
Tanguay passes the puck well. His skating was not as good as previous years. He avoided the corners like they had the plague and he did the unforgivable and gave up the ghost in the face of adversity instead of doing what a veteran should do and that's try to lead the way.
I hate to sound cruel about anyone but good riddance to Alex, his time here was done and I doubt that GM's were lining up for the guy.
|
20 something? lol you mean 28? Hardly that vast of an age gap. The guy isn't some kid. I'm not saying Tanguay should have stayed. I'd much rather see a pick for him though. A pick has no negative value. No 3 goal season. A pick is a pick and can be traded as such.

With respect to SB allegedly being the Vegas ringleader...
Whatever - guys make mistakes and assumedly learn from them. When something like that happens, the player has to be traded and is usually sold on the cheap. I am willing to see if he learned his lesson.

First of all, if you haven't noticed, the Oilers already beat us in the standings this year. We aren't some awesome team here. We ####ing blow. So much that even the Oilers beat us.
Second of all, that's way too much of a price to pay for Clutterbuck. Most I'd give for him is the 36th overall pick.

How is this spining our wheels? What were you expecting from a trade of Tanguay, he certainly had little to no value on the trade market.

i think my point was that you cannot blame Jones' lack of production on Sacco alone. Just as you cannot attribute Jones' good years to Sacco. He has to take on some blame for having a bad year.

And a true one. Once Jones got his big contract, he wasn't the same player. (Like Bourque) At least Tangs can still put up 50 + points, while Jones will most likely be a 3rd/4th liner for us.

|
Tanguay sure didn't play like he was one of our best players. I think you both overrate his value and underrate the value of Jones. Don't think Tanguay was anywhere near one of our most valuable players in terms of trade value. And we certainly weren't going to trade him for a pick and not take salary back with the cap going down this year.
We had terrible depth on RW, too much depth on LW and people get upset when we trade a soft, old LW for a younger, stronger RW. It works for us positionally. It works for us philosophically. Tanguay was completely redundant with our depth on LW and didn't show good character post-Iginla trade.

I wouldn't have much interest in Stastny, he's been rapidly sliding into the pooper for the last few years.
He's well on his way to a european finale.
