Just a question here, I want to give some volunteering manpower help but won't be able to until Monday next week. I'm guessing there will still be people in need at that point?

Either way - to me it seems like he showed up, let the Mayor be the Mayor and was there to show support. Good job by everyone.
Politics should be kept out of this thread.

Not to belabour a point but, you just brought politics into this thread with your comment. The image wasn't political in nature and remains entirely accurate.
On topic:
Does anyone know if the evacuation order will be lifted soon after power is restored to beltline/vic park?

I'm not a Harper fan in the slightest but really? Calgary is home for him (as in he owns a private residence in Calgary) and his family, and his mother lives here. He was an MP for Calgary SW. He went to the U of C.
He might only be there for the optics but to suggest he has no attachment or interest in the city is slightly ludicrous.

Looks to me like ranchlandsselling was using sarcasm. The whistling icon was in the place of green text.

All evacuation orders for any single family dwellings outside of the core hava already been lifted.
Is there a specific order you are thinking of?
Good info here: http://www.calgarycitynews.com/2013/...formation.html

What are you talking about? That's about as strong of an example of playing politics with this whole thing as you'll ever see.
As someone who's not in Calgary, can one of you guys fill me in on why Nenshi is getting so much credit here? I haven't seen anything that makes me think 'wow, that was some great work from the mayor' but again, I'm not there so could have easily missed it.

I think it is because of how visible he has been throughout the disaster and how long he has been up for. The guys must only be getting a few hours of sleep a night.

And frankly the city has done a good job handling the situation. No Katrina type of situation of dropping the ball, quite the opposite from what i see.

Part of it is that he has already built a large following on social media, so he can act as the main point of communication, and that he is genuine about helping people. He also knows his role in all this....
Quote:
Nenshi appears to intuitively understand what a political leader should be, and what he should not be, in a time of crisis. He must be chiefly a tireless communicator and cheerleader, as opposed to any kind of disaster micro-manager. The skilled politico lets first responders and hands-on volunteers do their life-saving work, praises them to the skies, and otherwise keeps out of the way. The very last thing any leader wants or needs is to appear to be taking advantage of a crisis for political gain. “I’m in control here,” said Alexander Haig, following the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan in 1981. Haig never lived it down.

Also, it stuns me that people when they see a post that is so obviously the exact opposite of the truth, that they default to the idea that the poster must be mind numbingly stupid as opposed to assuming it is sarcasm.

Probably becuase there are enough people like Andy Greschner out there who generally make it impossible tell if someone's comments are dripping with heavy sarcasm, or if they are really that ignorant.
That said, in this case, the whistling smiley should have given it away.

That being said, there really isn't much else Redford and Harper can do. They both have to manage larger jurisdictions, and despite representing Calgary ridings, neither is close enough to the situation to be effective beyond the sympathetic photo shoots and promise of money. In that vein, I don't take the photo as criticizing either of them.
In Nenshi's case, however, he is giving people direction, encouraging them to get involved, pointing out areas of need, etc. He's working tirelessly to coordinate and organize various city departments and he's using his social networking savvy to make it all run incredibly smoothly. Think of any previous mayor we've had. Do you think they would be this effective? I don't. And that's not to criticize them, but to praise Nenshi.
At this point, he's utterly untouchable in the election. He could be caught snorting coke of the ass of an Equadorian hooker he smuggled into the country illegally, and it would only cause his popular vote in the election to go up.

If somebody would like to start a new "politics of the flood" thread- go ahead. Otherwise let's keep politics out of this thread. So many come here for information, not a political debate.
