The river in Stoon is a bit higher than usual but it's been anticipated for the past few days, now.
Spoiler!

So how are people going to get rid of all the waste on the front lawn? Is there a plan in place? Is the city removing it or is it up to the homeowners?

I'm half tempted to send our excavator down there, because it looks like what is needed is an army of dump trucks and back hoes. Equipment like that is going to ruin roads though, so I doubt the city would be ok with it.

I was planning on bringing my truck down to pick up garbage when I fly back into town tomorrow, but really is it even worthwhile with the volume in those pictures.

The city said to leave large items out on the front lawn, so I'm sure they have a plan in place for picking it all up eventually.

I heard that the "got junk" bins are doing some kind of special. Normally they charge $700 per bin but are doing them for $100? Not sure if that's true or not, one of my co workers was in Erlton last night and that's what he heard.

City garbage trucks are coming around and will remove it for free (with the public's help). You can also hire people to take it away which will probably run in the $400 range at least.

Or there are good Samaritans with trucks, however, unless you have a really large bin or dump truck, it is not really worth it to take 1/2 ton loads out. You just block traffic and make it more congested for everyone.

Best option is to find a city garbage truck driving around your streets and try to convince them to come by your house and you have tons of people to load the truck. You will also need a clear path infront of the garbage for the truck to park.

The city garbage trucks do not take appliances. They have separate collection for them.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know why the irrigation canal that runs from Harvie Passage out to wherever it goes wasn't filled higher with this? I took a look driving in this morning and expected it to be a lot higher than normal just to alleviate some of the higher water on the Bow in general, but didn't notice a change.

I wondered the same thing. The canal had lots of volume it could have absorbed downstream. Chestermere lake wouldn't have been affected because you can flow right through without impact. The canals go for miles. Check out http://www.wid.net/information.html for more info.

i think it may not have helped regardless.

It is a small milestone, but AEMA no longer has any active critical alerts. Still a ton of informational one though.

Calgary Herald reporting the same thing this morning. And for those who were wondering about the percentage of proceeds going to flood relief, the Herald reports that "Every dollar above the cost of production is being donated."

There are some homes in the bottom lands below Carseland that are in need of help as well. I spoke to a guy at the hospital last night, who was helping but had been injured, and who won't be allowed to return to physically help because the danger of a massive infection being introduced because of everything in the water (he's already on an IV).

If anyone can help there, use google maps to get you from Calgary to Wyndham-Carseland Provincial Park. As soon as you cross the bridge, those instructions will tell you to turn right onto the road into that little park. The park managers could probably use some help too. Instead of turning right, you can also turn left - it says the road is blocked off, but it's only that there's a wash out a little way down the road. There are multiple homes in there could likely use a little help.

If you know how to get to the Speargrass Golf Course, the homes and the park are all in the bottom lands below there.

Great news! Power estimated to be restored to Beltline and Cliff Bungalow/Mission tonight by 10pm! Individual buildings still may need pumping to be restored - but large "L" grid expected to be energized.

I should mention that those bouncy castle fans work pretty awesome for drying out basements.

Also worth noting that Princess Auto has sent any flood relief equipment they have to Calgary, and their stores are staying open 24 hours for now:

According to who? Sorry to doubt but I live in area and have heard rumors of power being turned off every day since Saturday.

Bunk runs this thread: I work for Mayor Nenshi, ask me anything!

I'll take his word for it!

I hope this pic thing works, it is from 25th ave in Mission - a few blocks from my place

Place was devastated by water then cleared out by a Tasmanian devil-like team of volunteers

https://twitter.com/paul_yyc/status/...240320/photo/1

(update: use the twitter link)

Looking forward to getting power back, the novelty of camping on the front lawn (even though we slept in our own beds) was wearing thin.

I hunkered down with a bunch of neighbors that ( for various reasons) couldn't or wouldn't leave. We were one block out side the mandatory evac zone in the middle of mission. Once we realized that our street was going to stay dry, we tried to take care of ourselves and not burden the evac centres.

The next block over suffered incredible devastation, but we were fine with water and a generator. we ran fridges, charged phones and ate together (and even made a beer run or two) and waited for news.

The road works crews and the Cops and everyone else in this city have been awesome but you folks deserve to know that it was information from here that help us see both the big picture stuff and also the helpful details that reduced the anxiety associated with waiting things out.

Thanks for pulling us through the uncertainty.

This weekend I will be paying it forward with some sweat equity
