So have they given up looking for those that did not leave? I understood that was one of the main issues, was people still in their homes.

If my dog was left inside for 3 days without food and water, I would also be employing whatever measures I could to go get him. Pulling a knife on a cop would be much further down on my list.

Totally agree. I know if it were me, and my pets were trapped inside my house, helpless and just waiting to die, I'd be beside myself.

Not believing...simply asking the question. Wanted to have my facts straight before I set them straight!
Everything I've read and have seen says the Stampede is employing their own forces/temp labour and not taking resources directly away from anyone else.

This year we had none of that out here, it was all just the river.
|
This is so true.
I can remember that in 2005, the big rains came on Fathers' Day weekend. We had been deluged with rain for 2 weeks prior to that as well.
BUT on Saturday night of Fathers' Day weekend, we had 6 inches of rain in the Priddis area. Everyone had been holding up fine until the dam broke near the Priddis Golf Course...but when it broke, the whole valley here was flooded and that carried on through Fish Creek Park in Calgary.
This time, we had 4.5 inches of rain in 36 hours, considerably less. I can't recall the exact amount of rain we had June of 2005 but it was in the 19.5 inches to 23 inches range.....just way too much.
The area here is relatively unscathed this time as most along Fish Creek in the Priddis area have burms now and are well prepared. Plus the dam was rebuilt with a sluice and held with no problems at all.
We have never been affected by too much rain as we are high up.

While most Calgary residents are looking out for each others’ homes and property, there are a few looking to loot it.
In red zones — areas evacuated for citizens’ safety as the Bow and Elbow Rivers bloated and overflowed late last week — there have been 13 known break-ins.
It’s “absolutely” frustrating, said Calgary Police Service Duty Insp. Julian Gagne, and it’s something they’ve put resources into battling.
“We’ve deployed security patrols 24-seven at this point and we’re going to maintain that,” Gagne said.
Deputy Chief Trevor Daroux called that “a lot of eyes,” and not just those of Calgary’s finest — Joe Public is on tap to stop such activity at times when their neighbours are vulnerable.

Hwy 40:
Also note the pedestrian bridge, which was not washed away, but no longer goes over the river.

What is amazing, is there is no debris around, it's gone down stream.

That's obviously false, as it would have been a HUGE PR nightmare if true.

Not knowing at all where those reports are coming from, but I can understand how temping it can be for emotional High River residents to draw such conclusions. It must be hard for High River residents to watch the Stampede rapidly cleanup and rebuild, while their town is still a war zone. Bottom line is that mayor Nenshi and the Stampede board have been clear that the Stampede will not get any more special priority over anyone else vis-a-vis government services. It would be a scandal of monumental proportions if it came out that work crews were being diverted from helping people who lost their homes to rebuild the Stampede and I imagine that this fact is not lost at all on the Stampede board.

The giraffes were up to their bellies in water shivering, thankfully they didn't die.

I'm actually kind of surprised no animals were lost (so far as we know). The whole island seemed to be under water.

As I understand it, a couple of the free-roaming peacocks weren't able to be caught, and died. They had a couple of deaths, but no major losses, thankfully.

Not 100% true. They lost a peacock as well as piranhas and tilapia fish. But yeah amazing the losses we're more severe.

""While zoo staff were able to move most animals to higher ground to escape encroaching waters, one peacock died after it resisted efforts by zookeepers to round it up, and the zoo’s piranha and tilapia fish didn’t survive a power outage.""

What all about all the cichlid fish at the entrance of the Rainforest building?
My aquarium had no power for 48 hours, and all of my cichlids survived.

Apparently they had a staff member sitting on a skid steer loader with a rifle to make sure that those hippos didn't escape.
