Today as the water receded, elephants and giraffes were able to be outside enjoying the sun albeit on soggy ground. However, animal care staff sadly confirmed that in spite of their best efforts to corral our free-roaming peacocks on Thursday night, at least one bird has not survived the flood. While trying to round them up, some birds flew up to rooftops and trees and simply couldn't be corralled. A necropsy will be performed to confirm the bird's cause of death. As well, Dr. Jake Veasey, director of animal care, conservation and research, who has been at the zoo 24/7 since Thursday, advised that the tilapia in the hippo pool and the piranha in South America have not survived due to the sustained lack of power to the island to maintain water quality and appropriate temperatures for these tropical fish. In spite of the loss of the fish and a peacock, we are still counting our blessings that in the face of this natural disaster there have not been greater losses.

Utterly amazed at the spirit and character of Calgary and its citizens today. I had an amazing morning and again evening trying to do whatever I could. I had just myself a mid range Ford Escape and some gloves and helped out where I could with what I could. Lost count of the people showing up with whatever supplies they thought could help too. Truly amazing. Been in Calgary for about 5 of my 30 years and felt like a true Calgarian today.
I said it in the "help flood" thread but will say again here.
A huge thank you to SebC, surferguy and Furnaceface who came out to Discovery and helped at several houses.
They put in a hard 9 hour shift of much appreciated work.
We just went from house to house doing whatever needed doing. We brought tools , shovels, and other things; surferguy brought incredible knowledge and skills that went a long way.
Residents of Discovery came down with hamburgers for all, pizzas arrived, water and drinks abounded; a really great community effort.
Finkprof showed up later with coffee and donuts, thanks.
A hard but uplifting day, just trying to do something for people who have suffered. Thanks again guys.

Frink, how many ctrains are on the NW leg? It's going to be an interesting commute if the core opens up before the train lines downtown do and the NW is left with the 2-3 trains.

Table 5 should design Calgarpuck Flood '13 tshirts for us. I'm sure I meet some CP'ers today but I'd never introduce myself or mention Calgarypuck. Even if I saw Bigtime (which I think I did, handsome fellow)

Surferguy broke the first rule of CP. He kept telling my neighbours that he, Seb, FF and I met on the internet.

Just got this response from a CT contact:
Quote:
6 trains up in the north west. 4 keys are running at 10 min.
6-8 west. 4 running at 10 minutes.
Garage in the NE with 5 keys running at 10 Minutes and
2 garages in the south with 4 keys running at 10 minutes.
Frequency may be upped tomorrow.
They planned for the worst case scenario which is start to appear the case on a couple of fronts, and moved trains to the tail tracks of non garage line.

I know they have said numerous times that the tap water is safe to drink, but ours definitely tastes a little funny- anyone else notice this? Not in a flood effected area.
City of Calgary @cityofcalgary
Due to the natural debris that has come through the water treatment facility their may be an unusual taste. SAFE though.
City has made a number of tweets acknowledging there is a slight taste to the water, but is assuring people it is safe water. Personally, I noticed much more of a chlorine taste in the water. I believe they might be adding more to compensate for the sheer about of gunk they need to purify out.

um, yeah no, that's enough for me to go bottled, city of Calgary. But thanks for the reassurance, anyways.
I'm not shy. I wear my CP badge proudly. Best online community in this city. I was glad I could help today. There are lots of people out there who need help but will never ask for it. Find them and do what you can.

The water does taste a little odd, glad I stocked up on tap water when I had the chance. BTW, the way the water is now is about the best the water was all the time in several places I've lived.
