Sorry to hear about Banff. If the highway is still out, will they even be able to get people/supplies up there? Stay safe people.

Guess is as good as mine but that lake is huge.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves. It just mentions that the gates have failed, not the actual dam. So they may have just lost the ability to control the flow being released, that's all.

I hope info gets out about this soon. A lot of people could be in the path. Hopefully it reflects what archer said above

Thanks. I read it as though the dam failed.

A contact of mine in Banff says the flood gates only handle the top 6 meters of the dam or so, so the dam is presumably intact below that.

Thanks, I changed my post, don't want to sensationalize anything right now when so much is going on.

Town of Banff seems to be saying she's misinformed.

No dam or floodgate failures. The mayor of Banff, as well as the town of Banff are tweeting the same info

This issue with the dam will no doubt push back any potential re opening of the Trans Canada. Guess I'm taking the Crowsnest to get to the Okanagan tomorrow. Beautiful route but very long. Yeah, I know...first world problem.

Bridget's tweet didn't say the dam failed, she said "Lake Minnewanka flood gates (Banff) have failed" which seems to be correct.

Banff townsite twitter account is denying that:

Yeah, too bad we didn't have a big assed river that flowed downhill 3000 ft right to NHL headquarters.

Pretty sure it helps search results if you hyperlink his name:

Andy Greschner

Power outage update #16
Banff, AB -- 12:23 am, June 23:

Banff residents should prepare for a sustained power outage. Please conserve water.

The Lake Minnewanka dam has not been compromised.

The TransAlta power generating station supplying power to the Town of Banff has failed. TransAlta staff are on scene and are working to rectify the situation. Town of Banff staff are also responding. Please follow @Banff_Town on twitter for updates.

Internet access and phone service may be lost during this event. Please restrict cell phone usage to not overload the system.

Please conserve water during this time for essential drinking and food prep only.
Do not have showers
Do not wash dishes
Do not water outdoors
Be selective when flushing toilets

Tap water remains safe to drink

With power outage, all traffic control signals are out. Please treat all stoplights as four way stops.

This incident has necessitated an immediate stop to all traffic between Banff and Canmore until further notice.

The Town of Banff will update the situation in two hours unless there is an earlier update

You know I was sitting on the toilet taking an Andy Greschner, and reflecting on the events of the last few days and how amazing the police and fire fighters and military and government were in dealing with this crisis. And how the people had done an amazing job of rallying around the displaced, and I thought to myself that Calgarian's are just so much better to a person then Andy Greschner.
