I would like to let everyone know that the I just got back from a beer run to the Deer Point Liquor store in Deer Ridge (next to deer run in the Sobey's shopping area behind the Dairy Queen). The gentlemen who runs the store has a sign up "Free ice for anyone who needs". I asked him if this was in response to the Queensland liquor store selling ice for $20 a bag. He said it was, that he saw that and thought it was ridiculous so he figured he give his ice away for free. So those in the Deer Run/Ridge area without power that need ice for coolers and such can head there for some free ice. I think everyone else should spread the word and maybe give this guy some more business. Personally, of the three nearby liquor stores, I will be exclusively buying what I can from him.

We didn't go anywhere but the hospital here in town (S'more), yesterday. Had to go to the store and pick up meds today and the Shoppers here in town sold out of water pretty quickly - over 400 flats. People have been driving out from Calgary to do their shopping - we only went to Sobeys here today and it was packed. However, if you want bottled water, they are the place to go right now - I'm not sure I've ever seen that amount of bottled water all in one place before. 100s and 100s and 100s of cases/flats.
Have to say, it's the most efficient I've ever seen the hospital here run. It's usually crazy slow and terribly unorganized - so much so it's usually quicker to go to a hospital in Calgary, if you're in need of being seen. But they were told they were getting some evac'd patients from High River possibly, so they picked up their socks and got it together. Really too bad they can't operate as efficiently all the time, lol.
The Hutterite colonies from around here have been making and taking food down to the evac centres south of here, in several communities. My husband has a few friends at a couple of different colonies, and does some mechanic work for their colonies from time to time and he was talking to one of the guys this afternoon. He said they've made and delivered something like 7000 sandwich lunches to the evac centres. Baking bread and other items, almost around the clock since everything started. Thought that was just excellent of them.

Was it ever verified that that was real? If it wasn't this would certainly be one of the crappier outcomes of the social media craze in relation to all the price gouging accusations that turned out to be false.

I don't understand why people would need ice in a flooding situation ? So if all the water ran out you are going to suck on ice cubes? Doesn't even make any sence.

I saw the photo evidence of it. It could have been photoshopped , I am far from an expert there. Also, as far as I know, the price gouging was mentioned by Nenshi in one of this speeches. Either way, the guy at Deer Point liquor responded in a way, by giving his ice away, that I respect and I will therefore give him my business.

People in houses without electricity but who havnt been evacuated have to do something to keep their food from spoiling. Many, im assuming, would choose to throw ice into their fridge(or a cooler) to try and keep their food.

Metro published an article about the $20.00 ice. Looks to be for real.
Quote:
Gordy Marchant’s wife first informed him the Queensland Liquor Store in Calgary’s southeast was charging $10 for a bag of ice amid a rush by people to stock up on goods as floods ravaged Calgary Friday.
“I didn’t believe it, but was out having a smoke and figured, ‘What the heck, I’ll check it out,’ it’s only down the street from me,” he recalled.
Marchant got to the store shortly before noon and said he was shocked to find the sign on the front of the ice cooler now read $20 per bag. He snapped a photo and posted it to Facebook. That same image quickly made it to Twitter and had been retweeted by hundreds Friday afternoon.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Marchant said. “I went up and asked him (the store clerk) and he said, ‘Yep, $20.’ “
On his way out of the store Marchant said he told the clerk, “Just remember, karma’s a bitch.”
Metro has placed 25 calls to the liquor store; however, the line was busy every time. Marchant said a friend later told him the sign had been taken down.

Alot of places in the US (Pittsburgh, for example) have dammed and reservoir'd the absolute crap out of the rivers so catastrophic flooding is rare. Still a moronic comment, but the concept of your city flooding due to the river is foreign to some.

* To help ensure the mobility of first responders, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has offered Parks Canada temporary bridge components in the event any bridges are rendered unsafe or washed away. The ministry is shipping one of these temporary bridges today for use on the Trans-Canada Highway between Banff and Canmore, and has also offered assistance with erecting the bridge. It has also contacted the bridge manufacturer to see if it can help as well.

Temporary bridge structure. Cool. Wonder if it's one of those foldable military style.

Well never mind that last highway update - BNP just issued this. Hope no one was hurt.

Deputy Premier Lukaszuk grabbing some sand in Medicine Hat today.

Disgusting to read this tweet:

Couple in Medicine Hat packed up vehicles and trailers to leave ahead of the flood. Got up this morning to find it all stolen

Here's a beautiful video of the Oldman in Lethbridge taken tonight.
I'm keeping an eye on the levels of the Red Deer River at Drumheller as well, state of emergency and evacuations there as it's 7x more flow and 3 meters higher than normal. Expected to crest late tomorrow morning.

The safety of our students, employees and schools continues to be our first priority. In light of continuing emergency conditions in the city of Calgary and surrounding area, all Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD) schools will be closed on Monday, June 24. Only high schools in non-evacuated areas will remain open for students writing diploma exams for the week of June 24. Decisions regarding schools for the remainder of the week will be made as quickly as possible in consultation with the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA). Updates will be provided as soon they become available.
All Grade 9 Provincial Achievement Tests will be cancelled and students will receive their teacher-awarded mark.
|
Quote:
The CBE, CCSD and Alberta Education are working together and we have agreed that full exemptions for all remaining diplomas will be provided for all students. We know that some students may still wish to write the exams, so we will provide students with the opportunity to do so. If students opt not to write the exam, their teacher-awarded mark will be their final grade. No paperwork or action is required by the student to receive an exemption for any remaining diploma exams. Students and families are urged to make the decision that is best for them and not take unnecessary risks to get to their exam writing location.
|
Quote:
Students who opt to write the diploma exams should proceed to their home high school in non-evacuated areas at the regularly scheduled exam time. Students writing diplomas and attending the following flood-affected schools have been assigned an alternative writing location and should proceed to the exam at the regularly scheduled exam time This will apply to all diploma exams scheduled for the rest of the week:
