Yeah, I always thought that the ridiculous size of the berm was sufficient ... then I saw that picture of that creek turning into the Colorado River

I didn't live there in 2005

Check out the highwood river data from High River. From 30 m3/s to 800 m3/s almost instantly.

That's just north of Highway 1, not sure what side of Cougar creek it is so would be either Grotto road or Grizzly Crescent most likely. Just past the exit to highway 1A into town and out to Exshaw

hahaha. that is so true. EVERYTIME i drive by cougar creek there is barely a trickle of water.

I doubt any of those homeowners have flood insurance.

We have a lot of instrumentation set up in the Kananaskis area, the Hay Meadow site has over 150 MM of rain recorded in under 24 hours, maxed out the gauge.. that is basically right across the street from the Nakiska parking lot.

I have a basic understanding of how these events work, but I do work with a former Alberta Env. flood forecaster who walked me through it.. essentially there is a low pressure system moving east to west over the Rockies, the orographic lift causes the precip amount to nearly double:

Quote:
Orographic lift occurs when an air mass is forced from a low elevation to a higher elevation as it moves over rising terrain. As the air mass gains altitude it quickly cools down adiabatically, which can raise the relative humidity to 100% and create clouds and, under the right conditions, precipitation.
Usually, this happens on the West side of the Rockies (West to East), but every now and then it occurs on the right side, which is why all of this rain is getting dumped on Canmore.. usually by the time this would reach us the towel would already be wrung and just the soaked droplets would be left. Add in the fact that we have a steady stream of precip coming up from the Gulf and slamming into the side of the Rockies, means this system will literally just sit over top of where it is right now and unleash hell until a high pressure system comes in to push it out.

I lived in Canmore for close to ten years. I never ever thought I would see Cougar creek blow up like that. Kind of sad to see that right now.

From what I remember of the 2005 flooding, it was a little more steady than this. Days and days of steady rain. This time it seems to be coming down harder but in a shorter time span. Either way, the emergency/roads/utilities/insurance workers will be busy.

But what do I know - that was 8 years ago. Can you believe that was 8 years ago?

^Watching that video, it looks like the pedestrian bridge clogged up the main channel of the creek, and the water is now mostly rushing around the sides. The presence of that bridge may now be ultimately destroying those homes.

My Brother in law's picture from high river (apparently a long ways away from where the river is supposed to be):
