The dams help a lot.

2005 was much worse than this for rainfall, and the Bow didn't spill its banks then.

The Bow and Elbow below the dam are still only at "flood watch."

City of Calgary Activates Municipal Emergency Plan

http://newsroom.calgary.ca/pr/calgar...al-246927.aspx

Quote:
As of 8:28 a.m., the Municipal Emergency Plan (MEP) was activated and the Emergency Operations Centre was opened.

This decision was undertaken due to the anticipated heavy rains and flows on the Elbow and Bow Rivers throughout the day and into tomorrow which may have an impact on the city of Calgary.

Citizens are reminded to:
Stay away from rivers and creeks as the water is rising and moving quickly, and banks may be unstable.
Avoid storm water ponds and storm drains, and do not let children play near them.
Do not drive through flooded areas such as underpasses.
If you experience basement seepage or overland flooding, call 3-1-1 to report.
If you or someone else is in imminent danger, call 9-1-1. Remember that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only; please use 3-1-1 for reporting non-emergency issues.
Monitor local media and City of Calgary messages.
The Calgary Emergency Management Agency and its partners are continuing to assess the situation and will provide updates. A media availability will be scheduled later this morning or early afternoon.

City has also activated the Water Emergency Operations Center citing river flows and precipitation that was greater than anticipated. Sand bags and portable dams mixed with gauge reading in full effect.

If things get bad for the city does anybody know where I can volunteer to move sandbags if needed?

Compare that video of Cougar creek from today, to what people though was somewhat remarkable a year ago:

Dad says Threepoint Creek at Millarville came up a lot over night, but not too bad. Will probably drop later when rain lets up. No flooding in the basement so far.

For fellow Sunnysiders, what are the chances this year becomes a problem for us?

There's nothing worse than a watered down Latte

Knock on wood but my basement has never had an issue (good thing I work in a lumber store).

We do have that nice beefy 100 year flood berm to keep our lattes safe.

Not sure if your question is serious or not, but things have to get really, really bad before the Bow spills its banks. 2005 is good evidence of that.
