So is the angle of the pictures that's throwing it off? The jumbotron is off centre, and the seating on the corner of each side don't look uniform to the other side in those pictures (especially the bottom left corner in the bottom pic). Wouldn't it be weird to watch basketball like that as well?

Wow, very amateur looking layout.

The scoreboard is centered for basketball as BB courts are tiny compared to NHL. To fit an NHL rink they extend the floor to the empty space to the side.

The seating and scoreboard is completely symetrical/centred when it is setup for basketball.

Ok, that makes sense. I can see they basically just extended it on one side to make the rink bigger, which throws off all the seating and the jumbotron.

Still beats the Sportcheck Zone where your Jumbotron is a big-screen tv from 1995.

The funny thing is the islanders were approached/asked if they wanted to partner in the construction of the building, which would have lead to a design that would have adapted better to hockey, but they declined, leading to the building being designed basketball centric.

Basketball courts are not the same size as hockey rinks

There was some discussion on this last week as well. In the end, I believe "unique" or even "just plain odd" will trump any alternative.

So is the Islanders "attack" end the one with or without the Scoreboard? Clearly a tactical advantage to not have the scoreboard, allowing for higher altitude flip passes etc.

This layout is soo islanders though. Get everyone really excited with the prospect of a move, then botch the layout and have the only misplaced scoreboard in the league.

This has been known since day 1

There's no way the Islanders are going to stay more than a few years in there. There will be an owner that will build a proper new hockey arena for them down the road I imagine.

This makes me embarrassed to be a hockey fan.

They signed a 25 year lease.

Is it optimal for hockey? No, but the building and amenities are wonderful, apparently, plus it's no longer in the middle of nowhere. The islanders will be far more successful there than where that are now.

If the Coyotes move to Seattle before the new arena is built, we can expect the same layout. KeyArena has the exact same problem for hockey.

BTW, if the league were to relocate to Seattle, this is what KeyArena would be like... except worse.
