Yep I'd do it to get one of the consensus top 4 guys, and it seems plausible too.

Hmmm. Some folks think Stempniak is enough to go from 6th to 4th?
I don't see it, but if that's all it takes, it better be one of the first trades announced after the finals end.

You have to listen to offers on these guys. I mean, why not? Seems like Glencross is the only true untouchable on the team!

1. Trade all of our better players (Tanguay, Stempniak, Sarich, Cammalleri, maybe Giordano).
2. Overpay UFA's, and sign them to short-term (1 or 2 year) contacts.
3. Trade said players at deadline for more prospects/picks.
4. ???
5. Stanley Cup Champions!

No. I actually don't want the Flames to sign him just saying it could happen and might be a possibility.

This is the perfect time to load up on young players and let them get a ton of ice time over the next couple years. Of course you want a few vets sprinkled in, and you have to spend enough to at least get to the floor, but this is the time to tear it all all down and start from scratch. Bringing in guys like Horton (or Letang) on a large contract is the last thing the Flames should do. Let another team pay them the huge cash for the next few years and then when the Flames are actually a contender again they can go out and bring in bigger contracts.
|
Who said anything about a multi-year deal? Horton for $6M on a one-year deal sounds just fine and gives the Flames another asset to trade at the deadline.
Horton for $6M on a two year deal is fine too if he just wants to hang out and help rebuild the team and then trade him in the second year.
The idea is that if the Flames move all the vets out we are not going to make the salary floor. You can't do that with a team full of young players on ELCs.
The only problem I see is if we are relying on Horton to keep us above the cap floor and he gets injured, do we then drop below the floor and get penalized?

Hey Horton, at least hear the offer before you say no.

If Sarich is okay with helping a rebuild in the twilight of his career, he'd be a guy you hold onto. One of our only physical defenseman who would be a great mentor for guys like Cundari, Breen, Ramage, etc. He's also relatively cheap.

I agree about hanging onto these guys until the deadline as you'll get much better returns. We can't rely on all our young guys to put up all the offense, and if by some miracle, were challenging for a playoff spot, we're going to need them. The only one worth trading now would be Tangs. He's one of my favorites, but lets face it, he's kind of a whiny brat when things aren't going his way. Not really the kind of attitude you want when trying to build a new team persona.

Close but I don't think so, I see it as Sven Brodie Glen Gio.

As much as I like Sarich as a warrior, I would like to see a guy like Sieloff or Wotherspoon audition for his spot in training camp.
The other guys, meh. Move them for all the picks you can get in the top 90 IMO.

explain this. Why would Horton come to Calgary on a ONE year deal only to pack up and move again at the deadline? Why would he do the same on a 2 year deal?

agreed. Horton will look for a long-term contract. Wherever he signs, I'd be shocked if it's under 5 years.

Yeah, Horton ain't going anywhere on a one-way deal. If he leaves Boston (and even if he stays) he's going to bank on a long term deal.

I think the chances of Horton signing in Calgary on a rebuilding team is pretty close to zero. Even on a 2-year deal, there will be other teams that actually have a chance to make the playoffs and be competitive. I think as far as Calgary goes, it's got to be right near the bottom of the league for being an atteactive destination for UFAs who are looking to play a few more years and win the cup.
If you're worried about the cap floor it's a perfect time for Feaster to bring in a bad contract where the other team has to sweeten the pot substantially to make the deal happen. A poor contract to make the cap floor + young players and/or picks is the way to go for this team right now, not a UFA like Horton.

Not only do I think it's enough, it's overpayment. Stempniak should be getting a first rounder in a trade, not just a move up of two spots.

Look at it from the point of view of the team in that 4th spot?
How brutal would it be to move back two spots, when all you're getting back is a year of Lee Stempniak.

Giordano-Wideman
Brodie-Smith
Butler-Cundari/Sieloff/Wotherspoon/Breen
X: Sarich
That group is pretty scary without Sarich. It also means that we are putting a young player in the pressbox instead of playing big minutes with the Heat.
