To be honest I don't think the Flames will be drafting sixth. Therefore chose Other.

Yeah, the only edge in character Monahan has over Lindholm is that some people ascribe value to his being Canadian. I haven't read anything that leads me to believe Monahan has anything outside of nationality over Lindholm in the intangibles department.

I would take Monahan over Lindholm and should Monahan be gone Lindholm over Nichushkin. But if Monahan is gone then that would mean some GM jumped early to get him and Barkov is likely still available.
I would look at 4-5 other players before i would even consider Nichushkin i am not convinced he will stay long with the Flames or any other lower team unless they have some kind of miracle turnaround season.

I've changed my mind.
Put me on team Monahan. Apparently the best two-way center in the draft, bigger, canadian, already playing and excelling at north american game. Could be our ROR with more offensive upside. I like Lindholm a lot, but I see Feaster and Co. going in this direction for some of these reasons.
I still think there's about a 2 in 10 chance that Barkov falls to us, though. And in that case, it's a no brainer.

there's maybe only two clear cut #1 center's in the draft, Mack and Barkov. Monahan may be the next closest to being a #1 C. Having said that, the interviewee compared Monahan to Nieuwendyk, Trevor Linden and Logan Couture. If they aren't #1 C's, who is?

This week I am more re-affirmed to the Lindholm side of things and even more sold on him being the guy the Flames need more than Barkov..... Yeah, more than Barkov!
I feel crazy for saying this. Why? Lindholm has all the essential tools the Flames need Grit, more speed than the other two projected available centers and Right handed. Why is that so important? Ability to play right wing if the Flames ever get over loaded at center. Another dimension in offense when loading up lines late in the game. The multi-purpose dimension to Lindholm makes me want the Flames to take him more than Monahan. Having a right handed face off guy also helps when trying to make set plays on one side of the ice or the other.
I feel though this has to be said at the end of every post in this thread when talking about these two, I won't be upset at all if they take Monahan though. And I have been on the Barkov bandwagon longer than I can remember. Next week will probably be different so who knows!

Draft Pick

Both players are much needed by the Flames. Linholm with the more of an offensive upside while Monahan is more defensive minded and I could see him eventually being a captain in the NHL. I hope the Flames decide to go with the player they MOST need. It's been toooooo long since the Flames had a chance to get such a talented player like Lindholm. They need his offensive abilities, take him over Monahan. But still wouldn't mind Monahan if Lindholm is gone cause what team doesn't want a player like him

I have a feeling Carolina will pick Monahan at #5. The unknown for me is who Nashville picks, most likely Barkov...a very good chance Lindholm is available at #6. All depends on what happens with Nichushkin too, I can see him slide to #8 or 9...
I honestly don't know who I prefer between Monahan or Lindholm, I tend to lean toward Monahan since he's a good 2-way canadian C with size.

I estimate there's a 25% chance that Barkov falls to us.
Nurse & Nichushkin could very well go top 5. No one would be surprised if either did. Monahan came into this season as a top 3 talent & his stock is on the rise. Lindholm is a coveted prospect & definitely in the top 5 discussion.
5 picks before us, 3 consensus top picks, and then a pool of 5 players who could go 3 through 8. Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan, Nurse & Nichushkin.
Does anyone actually think we should be desperate to move up in the draft?

Maybe, but not from number 6 unless it is top 3

I think that comes with the territory when a prospect is well rounded but maybe lacks the elite skillset of the first tier prospects. That doesn't mean he won't be a solid #1 center. Besides every team needs a good #2 center so if that's what he turns into he will still be a solid contributor for this organization like a Daymond Langkow.

Logically, if he's worth it then it's not overpaying.
Of course only time would tell.

Don't want to blow a top 10 pick on a Daymond Langkow. Daymond Langkows are available through trade. Number one centers are not. If Monahan doesn't project as a top line player or do anything at an exceptional level, then stay the hell away from him.
This team needs top end talent. Lindholm has been identified as having exceptional talent. The big thing Monahan has going for him is he's big, Canadian and plays in the OHL/QMJHL scouting hub of Ottawa. The more I read and hear about this kid the more I believe he is an average player riding a wave of hype. I'm terrified the Flames draft him and end up with another Rob Niedermayer or (worse) an Eric Nystrom. I don't want guys that have potential to be good, I want guys that have potential to be great. I'm not getting the "great" potential vibe from Monahan.
