Default Rape Comedy? (videos are nsfw)

I was having a discussion with a friend over the subject of rape-jokes which stemmed from this video...

And then the follow-up...

NSFW!

I thought CP would be a great place for a mature discussion?

Comedy and tragedy are two sides of the same coin. Everything tragic therefore has a comedic flipside. Whether it is funny or not is more a product of the telling than the substance.

Or, as Mel Brooks put it, tragedy is when I cut my finger, comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.

I can respect that everyone has a line, but to say that humour is anything but subjective to the viewer/listener is pretty stupid.

Whether or not they're funny is open to interpretation. It's absurd to get upset at a comic for them. Comedy is tragedy + time. are jokes about Hiroshima more or less awful than rape jokes? Because one subject is a personal violation that doesn't take away your life. The other involves the incineration of 70,000 people in a matter of seconds.

Yet nobody is protesting outside a theatre when the Hiroshima comic comes to town.

Beyond that, people act like there's some epidemic of rape humour. There's not. Tosh dealt with a heckler. In a manner which was under different circumstances than originally reported.

That exchange tends to not favour the audience member no matter who the comic is.

Ultimately, comics don't want to tell rape jokes. They do, however, want to talk about whatever they want, and the second you say it's not okay to Joke about one thing, then everyone with a group or a cause who wasn't offended during the first 55 minutes of the show gets up on arms because the jokes were now about them.

comedy is very easy to not see. Stand up is something you have to seek out. So I would imagine 99.9999% of people who get outraged by tosh or Tracy Morgan or Dane cook only know about this because they went looking to be offended. So I have no sympathy for them. They got what they were looking for. And again. These are comics. Comics talk ####. They aren't running for office. They're trying to make you forget you have to go to work on Monday to that place you hate. Let them do their thing.

There are jokes about tragedy happening to both sexes.

Rape fantasy is the 3rd most popular sexual fantasy for women... apparently.

This women is just angry her fantasy ain't happening even the ones in the bottom 5.

*This is a fine example of "Take 5 mins and think before you post." moment.

Personally, it doesn't matter to me but Lil' Jimmy, crushed that blogger in that debate. I like where he credited the South Park and their statement saying "Either it's all okay or none of it is okay" with regards to offensive comedy. He also says that the victim should not be the punch line. I love his "Gang r***** in a port a potty" closer.

I support Lindy West's right to call comedians dicks and try to get sponsors to stop supporting guys that she doesn't like, but I think her argument would be a lot more effective if she did a better job of understanding and acknowledging the difference between rape jokes where the rapist is the butt of the joke and ones where the rape victim is the butt of the joke.

Daniel Tosh going after a female heckler by saying that it would be funny if she got gang raped is indefensible, but that's not the context in which all rape jokes are made. Even in her example where a comedian takes on the role of the rapist ("Someone got raped. I did it."), the comedian is joking about himself being an awful human being, not about rape itself or rape victims.

Well I actually watched the video. Great discussion and both sides are pretty well spoken, unlike myself.

The South Park reference is perfect though and we do know when someone actually means what they say instead of jokes. However it is difficult to post inflection...

Rape is bad unless your raping the shrimp bowl before others get to have a taste.

Its not rape if you yell SURPRISE first!

But I love comedy that pushes the edge and often offends people, I understand that comedy will always clash with people who feel its gone over some imagined line, and that line can differ from person to person.

Besides why can't we laugh at rape, we can certainly laugh at abortion jokes right?

There's a difference between offending someone and triggering someone. 1 in 3 women in Canada are victims of sexual assault. That means that there are women in everyone's life that this actually seriously affects. Being raped is highly traumatizing to the point that it can cause PTSD. A joke making fun of someone's accent is probably going to offend a lot of people, but it's much less likely than a rape joke to actually emotionally harm them.

Ok, first off: the joke is inappropriate. But I guess that's just my opinion.

Second: There is a huge difference between fantasy and reality. I have no idea if that statistic is true, but even if it is I would be willing to bet that any woman with a rape fantasy does not actually want to get raped. Maybe she fantasizes about it, but the thing about a fantasy, even about rape, is that you are still technically in control of that situation. Your mind dictates if something is going to happen or if it's going too far. Even if you play out a rape fantasy with a partner there is still some element of control because if you say something is too much then your partner is going to (or at least they should) respect that. These women may be fantasizing about it, but I would be really surprised if they actually truly wanted to be raped by a stranger with no control over the situation.

You can joke about rape. It's just a tell that you're a mysogynist jerk and helps eliminate you from the gene pool.

If only mysogynists and MRAs were only telling rape jokes, but what they're actually doing is so so so much worse.
