Also from Sony's CEO:

Quote:
"We take a look at this first and foremost as a game console," said Hirai. "We don’t want to end there. That’s an area we will obviously reveal and talk about in the coming months."
I'm guessing Sony will announce what Xbox One did at E3

Guess it is to be expected for a first version of the new system. Can't imagine how much larger the damn thing would be otherwise.

External is probably better anyways... if your power supply goes (and it doesn't take the other components down with it), it would be easier to replace.

^^ Also why have an extra source of heat inside the unit itself; especially when the 360 was prone to failures due to heat. It should however have just a standard 2 or 3 prong plug with a cord that leads to the power supply brick; and not one that makes it so it takes up 3 spots on the power bar.

I always thought the same thing myself about the power brick, never really got the complaints about it. Yes, it's quite large, and I'm not so keen on having a big indicator light on it. But the possibility of failure and the heat thing is definitely a concern and a good reason for keeping it separate from the console.

I have both a PS3 (60gb launch console) and an Xbox 360 (Pro console, non-HDMI). The Xbox 360 is rather quiet, while the PS3 pretty much necessitates my cranking the volume on the home theatre because it sounds like a Boeing 737 entering take-off mode... and throws heat like one, too. It's a great console, I just wish it wasn't so damn loud.

The challenge is that we want our consoles to be small and powerful, but then we also don't want a power brick (or at least we want it to be small). With laptops, we can get around the issue because a laptop - aside from the under-side heat vents and fans - has a really big heat vent... the keyboard. Also, lots of people stack their A/V components... my X360 lives on top of my Shaw HDPVR.

Are you serious? I have a launch 60GB PS3 and sometimes I have it on for 10+ hours at a time (I bump my remote which turns it on) because I can't hear it and I don't notice it is even on until I look and see the green light.

My 360 however, a newer Elite model, is so loud that even at the xbox dashboard it sounds like 10 fans going off, then I turn on a game and it sounds like a fighter jet taking off.

If your PS3 is louder than your xbox then something is wrong with it. Even when My PS3 turns the fans on when I'm playing it still quieter than the 360 is just idling. The 360 is pathetically loud.

My experience is the same as TorqueDog's. My newer 360 is very quiet, especially if I am not playing games. If I am sitting in the menu's or watching Netflix it just puts out a barely noticeable hum. The PS3, on the other hand is noticeable. It's not bad enough for me to turn up the volume or anything, but I can definitely tell it's there.

My PS3 is primarily used by my 6 year old for watching movies and playing Skylanders, so it's possible (likely) he hasn't treated it very well. Maybe the fans are gummed up with dust or other junk.

I'd argue the exact opposite. The 360 shouldn't be that loud at all.

I made a video to demonstrate the noise imbalance.

As of 8:43PM, it's still uploading and processing, but you can watch it here when it's done:

I'm thinking some of you have fans that have either died or lost their alignment.

My fans are politically disconnected. They are 'freemen' on the AV rack.

I'm going to ask Dan at Killasoft if he knows anything about getting the fat PS3 fans to pipe down.

My first gen 360 was super loud and was replaced with an elite which is silent. My original PS3 (which just died!) has always been silent. I have always thought the PS3 was known for being quiet, guess not.

I had an original Xbox 360 that was very loud when a disc was in. The Slim 360 however, is very quiet. The slim PS3 is also very quiet.

If you could share the answer I'd appreciate it. My PS3 is in my basement, and I can literally hear it running from any room in my house. It's a small house mind you, but it's still incredibly loud.

Please share! I have 3 of these that I would love to make the fan nice a quiet instead of the airplane taking off
