Right

Just because he might have dirty plays for a couple does not mean he completely changed as a player. He's been in the league for over 15 years now, and obviously there are going to be stretches without him committing dirty plays, or being suspended. So cleaning up his act for a small stretch of time doesn't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.
Cooke wasn't even suspended in his career prior to 2009, so you could say there was a 10 year period where he was a relatively clean player. Taking less penalties and avoiding suspensions for a couple years isn't much different.

Because Hughson and Simpson's opinions matter.
Healy didn't say it was the right one

How many other players this year had their Achilles cut in a similar fashion? Heck how many in the last 5 years? I honestly can't think of one where a similar action occurred. The only time it really has happened involved Matt Cooke; the player many people consider to be the dirtiest player in the game (him or Torres at least).
I don't think it was intentional, but considering who was involved you really can't be 100% sure it was not either.
|
Outside of Sens fans and Cooke haters who said it was intentional?
Every former player I heard said it looked almost impossible to be intentional and Cooke would have to have had amazing foot control to hit right at the exact spot where his leg was exposed while not looking down to hurt him intentionally.
The fact that it hasn't happened before seems to indicate that it was a complete fluke. There are plenty of similar hits but to get the right spot is extremely tough to do.

Compared to that Kings/Hawks games, I wouldn't say the pace at the top is any different.

Much easier to imagine someone with Cooke's history of hurting another player deliberately. I don't understand why he is suddenly such a golden boy. Was there some human interest piece on television about his brave efforts to not hurt other players in the past couple of years?

Watching NBC mostly, and they all said it was the right call.

How is he a golden boy?
Saying he didn't hurt Karlsson on purpose and that McQuaid turned into the hit is not saying he is perfect.
Again Cooke has done plenty in the past no need to make stuff up about him now and pointing that out isn't raising him to a golden boy status.

Probably, but McQuaid was injured on the play, Neal played the next shift. Big difference there. It probably shouldn't be of course, but not according to the NHL.

I think Marchard was more a push than a 'plaster' like Cooke.

I think there's something odd about how strongly people defend him. Even if you disagree about some particular play, I'm sure you see why someone else might not give him the benefit of the doubt.

Bruins never get called for anything but I figured that would be somewhat negated by the Penguins

Shouldn't matter one bit in terms of what is called or not.
If refs are making calls on whether a guy is injured or not they should be booted from the league.

It's not worth having Malkin off the ice for 5, but nice to see some fire.

Yeah, the two plays aren't remotely the same.

Injury shouldn't matter. It's stupid when Glencross gets suspended because Drury is made of glass, it's stupid when someone else isn't because the guy gets up right away. A dangerous play is a dangerous play, a check from behind into the boards is a check from behind into the boards.
