In the event that CGY somehow acquired another top 6 pick, I would make my selections a little differently. By taking Barkov and Lindholm or Nichushkin.

Love it if we landed Clowe. We desperately need some size and strength up front. Horton would be a good fit. Murray doesn't really make sense long term.
Not really sure what the Flames will do in the UFA market this year, should be interesting.

Well I think some guys, especially who have played on winning teams, may want to be a core player. Certainly Horton or Clowe would be a top line player in Calgary and be a huge part of the team right away. Both have been kind of second fiddle on good teams before. It could be they want to keep playing in that role, but wouldn't shock me for a player in the middle of his career to want to be 'the guy'.

I personally feel that the short season was misleading. If this had been an 82 game season the flames would have been out of it come December. I really believe we would have been picking in the top 2 this year with a full season. We were 2 fluke goals away from drafting 4th as is.
I have center ice and watched a lot of other teams play. What i noticed was teams came out slow but gradually found their game, by game 15, and started trending up. I can't say the same for the flames. Their game play did not trend upwards after game 15, it seemed to plateau at that mark.
Feaster got one thing correct this year when he said the good home stand was very misleading. On a full schedule the flames would not have been seeing teams playing their 3rd game in 4 nights. Not to mention when was the last time weather played a part in 2 games?
The youngsters that came in played hard, but can they do that for a 82 game schedule? Look no further than the North to see that it probably can't happen at their age. Going to be some big learning patches for these young players, that's a good thing though. Add in that some of our remaining veterans seem to like to float ( i don't think that will change), it's going to be a long year. I like Cundari but that is a huge drop off from having JBO play 24+ minutes a night.

Aside from the draft, I'm curious to know the organization's feeling on Cammelleri and whether or not he'll be a part of the core moving forward.
I'm torn when it comes to Cammy. Part of me sees him as a good competitor and leader to have on the Flames, another part of me sees potential to acquire more picks/prospects for him as well.
But damn, we still need to ice some vets with scoring and competitiveness...

Just because it has never been top 5 before does not mean it won't be top 5 ever. Not even the young guns looked as bad as the 2013-2014 probable lineup, and I doubt there are too many, if any, teams with weaker looking rosters going into next year.
Throw in a mediocre coach and an absolutely boneheaded management group with no idea what it's doing and you've got yourself a recipe for a really ugly season, I'd say.

I am sure by this time next year the 2014 draft will be the deepest draft in the history of sports. Draft classes tend to get "better" and "deeper" the year their draft is up.

That's an exaggeration and doesn't really happen.

If we could trade next years first rounder for #3 overall this year you would be crazy not to. Next year's pick may or may not be an amazing player with franchise potential but this years #3 already is that, bird in the hand, #3 might even be Mackinnon.
Tampa wouldn't likely do the trade anyway but if the opportunity existed you take it.

This years draft was supposed to be decent at top and okay throughout and now has somehow been labelled as very deep draft similar to 2003.
Last year was a weak draft but a couple weeks before the draft you start hearing a lot of guys 10-45 could be really good steals and as good as anyone in the draft.
I understand why teams and the media does it. It isn't good business to cover a meh draft or to draft low upside guys but the lead up to the draft does lead to the draft being considered better than it has been.

He suggested Gio was the leader as soon as Iginla was gone. Either he was being a great team guy, or he was making sure leadership didn't fall to b as he knows he'll be leaving as well.
Personally, I don't think he's really been all that good in his second tour with the team...and he's beyond the age where he'll be overly impactful to the result of the rebuild, so I hope he gets moved for futures.

Hey was on prime time sports and sounded to me like he was uncertain about his future. He said something like the team is obviously changing and he'd have to wait and see what comes. It wasn't a strong statement to stay by any stretch.
I expect he start the year in Calgary as part of a playoff push, and if they are out of it he'll get moved as a pending UFA. Just a guess though.

Does anybody know when the buy out period starts? My guess is that it's after the draft but before July 5th.
Also if a player is injured can he be bought out? I don't think he can, but the rules might have changed.

I love Cammy but I think the best thing for this organization is to trade him at the deadline for a late 1st rounder.
He is a great competitor but the Flames can't afford to sign him long term because this team already has too many small forwards. Sven and Gaudreau are the top prospects and both are small. Hudler is signed long term, and that makes potentially 3 of your top 6 forwards in two years time being extremely small. Flames have to support those 3 guys with skill AND size to be competitive. I know this is going to be news to Feaster but you can't ice a team of smurfs and hope to be competitive, especially with where the game is trending back towards size.

Looking through the list of possible free agents this summer.
Obviously the Flames, if they were to wade into the UFA market, would be looking for young guys.
Here are some options with ages as of the start of next season: (I realize a lot of these guys will never make it to UFA and even if they do it will be a bidding war)
Mark Fistric - 27 - Big bruising defenseman
Mason Raymond - 28 - Speedy scoring winger
Tyler Bozak - 27 - Two-way Center
Damien Brunner - 27 - Skilled winger
Bryan Bickell - 27 - Huge power forward
Nathan Horton - 28 - Big, skilled winger

i like the idea of bickell if he'd take a one year we can overpay a touch and have him for our deadline fire sale.
getting to be a bit of a familiar refrain, i know.

Why are all these FA's going to sign here and move here only to be a part of a trade deadline fire sale??
People keep bringing it up like it's actually going to happen.

A player like Bickell will be in high demand. He will recieve many multi year deals. No chance he signs a one year deal on a bottom team. Maybe he signs a one year deal to stay in Chicago but that's a different situation.

Flames need to talk Kipper into playing one more year for the Penguins. He gets the chance to win the cup, solves the Penguins cap and goalie situation for one year and Flames get something back(?) instead of nuttin.

Because they want an opportunity to get a lot of ice time and responsibility? They want an opportunity to prove themselves?
Jagr did it.

A) jagr was a mercenary to begin with
B) when does this scenario actually happen?
C) when it does happen, how often is it a player under 30?
