I dunno, considering the populations of England and America and the number of English folks i've met outside, vs the number of Americans, the English seem more keen to be out and around the world. (or at least out of England)

It's pretty easy for the English to leave England, Europe is a bus ride away. It's a much bigger trip for Americans to travel overseas. Heck, for much of America a trip to Mexico or Canada is a pretty long journey. Americans probably travel a similar amount as any other population, but they likely travel more domestically than others. It's kind of hard to blame them really, I mean look at the lists of people on here. Most of them feature a number of states with obvious draws, when all of those places are in your backyard it's much easier to stay home than travel abroad.

very true, i wonder if distance from your home city would be more revealing. People in europe are usually surprised when I tell them it takes longer to go from Vancouver to Toronto than New york to London.
I think also America is really good at marketing itself to other Americans, while as Canadians, we don't feel that same draw to see America and are drawn to the rest of the world... or nicer weather.

Only been within Canada (BC, Alberta, Sask) and Montana in the USA. I envy and admire those who get to travel long distances.. gotta be quite something.

Stop telling them that, it isn't true
4 1/2 hours from Vancouver to Toronto, just under 7 from New York to London.

I suspect people find that surprising mainly because it's not true.
Toronto to Vancouver is 2085 miles, and New York to London is 3451 miles.

Well Vancouver to Halifax is very close in distance to Halifax to London.
The flight from Halifax to Calgary is longer then Halifax to London due to prevailing winds.

A friend of mine in his 30's has lived here in Billings his entire life. He's been to Europe, but has never been to Yellowstone National Park, which is 1.5-2 hours away from here.

So those of you who have traveled extensively: how do you do it? Do you generally visit many countries in one trip for months at a time, or do individual trips?
I can never get enough time off work. I spent 2 weeks in Japan, 3 weeks in Egypt and 3 weeks in Western Europe and each of those years I was saving my entire allotted vacation. I want to travel more and have fantasized about quitting my job and taking off for a year. I want to do this and hope one day I will.

Meh, other than the climate and landscape, everywhere in the US is almost exactly like everywhere else. There are a couple standouts, pretty much limited to New York City and Hawaii, but if you've been to Milwaukee, you've basically been everywhere in America.
