I just don't see the Flames going big game hunting considering that they aren't likely going to be a playoff team next season. I see them offering Mason Raymond a 4 year deal but after that it's a crap shoot.

Clarkson is from Toronto, has a house in Toronto and is telling everyone privately that he wants to sign in Toronto and will take less money to do so.

Hopefully we don't get Clarkson. Doesn't fit with our new "Hockey IQ" mantra

I sure hope so and that the owners are pushing for playoffs ASAP and willing to make drastic moves.

Raymond would be a decent fit. Somewhat of a local boy. Decent size, excellent speed and comes from a winning organization.

And he's in that 20-30 year age group that the team wants to fill.

I don't think Raymond is as high on the Flames wish list as everyone seems to think, he doesn't fill a need.

Raymond has great speed, but in the end he's really just another small(ish), weak(er), left handed winger.

No thanks.

If we're going to target a UFA winger, hopefully he's big, strong, a right handed shot, and young enough to still be a help to this team in 3-5 years.

Also, if they do sign a guy like that, hopefully they make room up front for him by trading at least one of Cammalleri/Tanguay/Hudler.

I see them going "big game hunting" in the summer of 2014. Flames will probably finish in the bottom 5 next year and that will be enough for the ownership to say "screw this". I don't think they have the patience for a long rebuild.

Granted with Sven, Johnny hockey, Jankowski, this years top pick, and next years top pick, they will at least have a solid prospect of 1st and 2nd line players. Add the Reinharts, Witherspoons, Sieloffs, ect. not a bad prospect base all around. Need 2 gems in the next 2 drafts.

Also if they trade Stajan, Cammi, Stempniak and hopefully Tangs at the next deadline, they will accumulate more picks and have a ton of money to spend.

Safe to say that Raymond would be looked at as a long term player and Cammalleri and Tangs not so much. One or both could be traded over the summer and Cammaleri for sure at next season's deadline.

Raymond is an upgrade on Tanguay in the speed and youth aspect. Also plays better down low. A three headed LW combo of Glencross and Sven with Raymond certainly looks better to me. Add to that could likley pair extremely well with Stempniak and Stajan/Horak/Whoever to make one solid third line.

This would be my hope since I think he gets a 1st at the deadline, but if he takes on a leadership role I would not be surprised to see him resigned.

In my crazy dream scenario we'd grab another top ten pick no idea how though. But as long as we're dreaming. Here's my perfect offseason.

Trade 1 :

Glencross For Jake Muzzin and Kyle Clifford

Trade 2:
Tanguay For CBS 1st Rounder 23rd overall

Trade 3:

Stempniak,Butler,Brossoit and Pit First Rounder For Meszaros and 11th Overall

Trade 4:

Giordano and STL 1st rounder for Edm 7th overall.

Sign Horton.

Draft: Lindholm, Nischushkin, Ristolainen and Fucale.

Horton-Backlund-Baertschi
Cammy-Stajan-Hudler
Clifford-Reinhart-Horak
Jackman-Bouma-Whomever
Mcgratten,Byron

Wideman - Meszaros
Brodie - Ristolainen
Cundari - Muzzin
Sarich,Breen

Ramo
Macdonald

Is it 20-30? I was thinking it was more 22-27. Flames better not be spending good young assets on a 28-30 year old. Since it is a ufa that is a bit different I guess

Just so you know, Raymond is the local whipping boy here. Perimeter player. He will drive CP crazy.

Really nice kid, great wheels, but he is tiny, tiny tiny. Ya he is tall, but SKINNY. I don't know how he does not get snapped in half out there (I guess he almost did in the SCF).

Goaltending:

Kiprusoff retires
Former 1st round pick Irving cuts ties with franchise (a lesson as to why we shouldn't be picking a goalie in the 1st round in the coming draft)
MacDonald and Brossoit wind up with the NHL jobs
Ramo retreats back to KHL,
and Berra plays with Ortio in the AHL.
Gillies continues to age like a fine wine in Hockey East.
Taylor joins whatever AHL squad Irving signs with and beats him out of his starting job there too.

Defense:

Giordano, Wideman, Brodie remain in the top 3 rotation.
Cundari and Breen make the squad as rookies.
Babchuck walks, Carson does too.
Sarich, Butler and Smith fill out the backend roster.
Wotherspoon pulls a Brodie and plays 4 games to start the season before being send down to Abbotsford.

Forwards:

to come (maybe...)

People love doing lines even though they change like once a week during the season.

Well I think management is inept but I don't think they are dumb enough to manage assets that poorly. Brossoit will not be in the NHL next year at least not that badly. One of Ramo or Berra will be in the NHL and my guess is they each end up getting some starts.

A couple of moves I honestly wouldn't mind seeing the Flames make:

1. Something based around Cammalleri for Stastny.
  • They have an abundance of centers and could use a winger, we have an abundance of wingers and could use a center
  • Both make close to the same $$ and have similar cap hits
  • Both are heading into final year of their contracts
  • Flames and Avs aren't going to be division rivals anymore
  • If Stastny doesn't end up being part of the long term solution in CGY, he can still be dealt as a rental next deadline...same for Cammy in COL

2. Something based around Tanguay for Wisniewski
  • Different GM signed Wisniewski, new one might not be that attached to him
  • When they signed Wisniewski, Nikitin hadn't established himself as a top 4 D-man yet
  • They also hadn't yet acquired Johnson, Erixon or Murray either
  • In other words, they are deep on D and could use a setup man for Gaborik
  • We have an abundance of smaller, skilled wingers, and could use a top 4 Dman
  • Tanguay is a similar player to Prospal (who is UFA), but 5 years younger

3. Attempt to cheaply acquire Joel Ward from Washington
  • They have 4 big bodied RWers with Ovy, Brouwer, Fehr and Ward all signed for next year at a combined $17,705,129 cap hit
  • Brouwer and Fehr just signed extensions, and Ovy isn't going anywhere...Ward could be the odd man out and might be cheaply acquired
  • They are tight to the cap next year, and Ward carries a $3 million cap hit
  • We need some big bodied, physical, tenacious right wingers and have plenty of cap space
  • Ward, at 32, isn't "pre-apex" but he definitely brings an element that the Flames sorely lack

The incremental talent to get from a career best 53 points to the 70-80 point level is not insignificant. Tanguay has IQ and skills that hard work alone can not recreate. And on the other side, there are roles to be filled.

The issue is more with the intellectual honesty around Stajan/Horak/whoever. Do you fix the actual problems or tinker in less impactful areas?

Given the current roster full of interchangeable wingers, you have to look at G, D, and C first before sourcing a whinger from Van
