I'm not sure why Carolina needs to reach for a D or the Russian. They take the BPA over need and compile assets that can use you to improve the team through trades.
You can switch a center to wing as well. Did Tanguay being a center stop Colorado from taking him and adding him into a stacked team?

why in the world did Colorado match the Flames offer for O`Rielly?
Where would O'Rielly go in this draft..?.... Just based on talent and potential and then when you factor in he takes up 10% for your cap space.

It can't be understated how top heavy this draft is. The top 8 (give or take) would have all been first overall picks in the last couple of years. Really hope the Flames walk away with Lindholm or Monahan.
Hopefully the Russian gets snagged by someone before us to let someone else "fall". Maybe Nashville?

Because it was a risk, for both sides. The Flames flirted with a top four pick, if that happened advantage for the Av's. The Flames also flirted with moving towards it being a pick in the 9-10 range... where they probably wouldn't get a player as good as O'Reily.
Not what this thread is about anyways though.

Hope not, that would mean the flames passed on him. Monahan is the kind of center that wins playoff rounds. Flames need him.

I'd love to see the math in this happening

My guess is that the Flames' order of preference is:
Barkov, Lindholm, Monahan
Unlikely (but certainly possible) that both Barkov an Lindholm are gone when we pick. If so, however, I think the Flames take Monahan

I happen to agree. They would package Gagner to get a top 4 defenseman if they could draft one of Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm (that order). They only take a defenseman if they win the lotto (or trade their 1st in a package for a top 2 defenseman).

To Flames:
Stastny (and his massive caphit)
Avs 1st rounder
To Avs:
Flames #1 pick
Blues #1 pick
flames use the pick to get Mackinnon
Takers?

Haha...maybe the top 3 but definitely not the top 8. Nuge, Huberdeau, Landeskog, Yakupov and Murray were all way bigger prospects than guys like Lindholm, Monahan or Nurse.

They're likely still hungover from Radulov and Kostitsyn. I can't see that happening with the other quality players available at 5/6.
Carolina? Paired with Semin and the Staal brothers; Could jump in right away; don't need another center. They need defense but they also signed Semin to a 6 year deal so who knows what they're thinking.

With the UFa market being as bad as it is, Stastny will have some value even with his large cap hit.
I could see the flames offering the Pitt pick for him straight across.

Landeskog and Huberdeau, ya. Never impressed with Murray.
And your colors are showing by including "Nuge" and the one dimensional Yakupov.

Disagree. I think the latter names are just as good as the former.

I just can't see anything that would be enough value for one of the top 3 picks.
Remember, for the most part, not making risky moves avoids the "move that got me fired". Add that to the fact the GMs in the bottom 3 are likely in a bit of trouble already and I don't see them passing up a sure fire star for cap relief and riskier picks, or multiple riskier picks

I doubt the Avs take those 2 picks for their pick, never mind throwing in Stastny as well.

No way. Top three would have been, but that's it from everything I've read.

I have a feeling both of our team will be in the bottom 5 picks next year so we'll have a lot more excitement coming both of our ways!
