Yeah. The Blues still have something to play for and shouldn't have too much trouble. Beating the Hawks in the UC is about as unlikely as it gets.

Two flames losses and a win by Edm,Nsh,Car would vault us into 4th. So you're telling me there's a chance!

Some nice drafting by the Caps there. Holy. #1 in 2004 was obvious, but other than that, very nice.

yeah, especially Washington ... they had 3 picks twice and all 6 players are full-time NHL players. Ovechkin was a no-brainer, but getting all the others right isn't. Colorado did well in 98 too.
Of that list, I only see Edmonton and the Islanders that have done really poor ... Gagner is fine, but Plante seems like a bust and they traded Nash for a 2nd rounder three years later. As for the Islanders, Connolly and Pyatt have been fine players but they traded them both after a year or two for Michael Peca. Mezei was pretty meh and Kudroc was a bust.

My only concern with comparing ANY draft to 03, is that 03 was a stacked stacked stacked draft. Thats three stacks.

If Nurse and Nichushkin have pushed themselves into the top 5 discussion, all the better for us, giving us an outside chance to end up with Barkov or Lindholm at 7.

Not entirely true.
They flipped Riley Nash to Carolina for a high 2nd - which they used to draft Marincin - a dman that's looking like he could end up being a player.

I'd still be very disappointed if the top player we get out of this draft still hasn't broken 50 points or 20 goals six years from now.

Still though, we have to set the bar for expectations at getting 3 NHL regulars, regardless of how unprobable that is.

Just wanted to say that once a team is in the playoffs, the only thing that affects draft position is the round they exit. If the Blues exit in the first round they drop into the first group after the non-playoff teams and they are then ranked by regular season point totals.
I guess, the poster is referring to having a lower point total overall to help our first round draft pick? Maybe referring to a higher seed having an easier 1st round opponent? Other than that it shouldn't matter.

But 8 teams go out the first round, and their league position is used to determine their draft slot.

Yes...I seemed to have already mentioned that.........
If that's a real concern shouldn't we be concerned about the Blues also leapfrogging teams in the East point-wise?
We have a confirmed 1st round pick from the Blues. It will be in the latter half of the round. They aren't likely to win the cup but playoffs are strange. I just don't see the big difference between 20-25 (likely where we get the pick) so why bother?

IMO if 2 of the 3 picks don't turn into NHL regulars the draft is a failure. Given 3 first round picks in this draft should yield a couple of pretty good players and all three should pan out if the scouting group is really on the ball.

Yes people have been watching the out of town scoreboard with an eye towards any team passing the Blues and thus improving the draft position of our STL first rounder. Personally I've been much more concerned about the position of our 1st rounder.
The difference between having pick #15 and pick #24 is pretty large. That said STL has been too good lately for the pick to be very low. And given that STL plays us next and we should be hoping for a STL win I don't think their pick will get much lower.

Oilers kind of had to trade Nash I believe. Think he was planning on going the Justin Schultz route.

Agreeing with FDW and his answer to Cali Flames Fan. It is the dual effect; lower finish for the blues means tougher first round series in theory and better pick for us if they lose that series.
Do a couple of positions matter to us? maybe, maybe not. But they might matter to someone that will give up something of value to have us drop a spot or two. I guess what I am saying is that all other things being equal, the higher the draft pick the better for the flames. That's how I think of it.

It looks like a tough day for the blues pick. With the Leafs and Kings losing and San Jose behind St Loius controls its destiny with all of those teams meaning the pick could end up 22nd pretty easily especially if we lose to them.
