I just can't figure out what the argument is. Its out of their control. They can't throw games and if other teams #### the bed against us what can you do? No point in being mad for the sake of being mad.

He isn't a core player. I don't think he ever will be. But right now at this point of the team's history, he's arguably the best centre they have, and without making any moves in free agency to bring on Roy, Bozak, a newly bought-out Richards etc both he and Stajan need to be healthy and put up those 50-point seasons being force fed top line minutes to stabilize the center position. Whoever we draft cannot be immediately looked upon as the savior, no matter how good they are.

Not sure if you quoted the right post or not because I don't see how they relate.
But that being said i have said I was frustrated with the loses not mad in another thread and in this thread I said I don't expect them to throw games.
I am upset that the games are won not at the players, the situation.

This year Backlund has already has shown more skill, tenacity and smarts than I have ever seen out of Stajan.
He's shown offensive ability this year in the NHL and offensively dominated the 2nd tier Swedish league during the lockout.
You continue to put more stock in his WHL/AHL numbers than how he currently looks on the ice game in and game out.
Slowly over this season he's earned the top line centre role that he will in all likelihood have next season. I'd expect his numbers to jump quite a bit next year with premier minutes/linemates and a top PP role for a full year.
I guess we can revisit this one next year.

I am asking you to back up your beliefs in why the current young players aren't good enough. You stated that the Flames winning these games is going to hurt their chances of getting one of the good players at the top of the draft, yet you have no factual basis to PROVE that MacKinnon/Drouin/Jones will be any better NHL players than Barkov/Lindholm/Monahan. I would rather watch effort to win games than cheer for a draft position.
And to state that I wrote a snarky/pissy reply because I don't agree with you, then you see exactly what every person reading these threads get from you on every point.

He is clearly a core player going forward. Backlund, Baertschi and Brodie are our 3 biggest building blocks going forward.

Eh. They earned the win. With all the young guys in the lineup, earning wins against teams that should be in desperation mode matters long-term. Some good victories against teams that should have wanted it more than you, to go along with some defeats like Minny that you can take a lot of positives from, are going to help these players develop as professionals.
On top of that, there is something karmically to be said for not mailing it in a la the Oilers, Avs etc. The Devils played their way out of contention for the first overall pick entirely, and when they were sitting at 8, they won the lottery and drafted Larsson. We won't be able to do that, we're still going to be saddled with a top 5 pick. This was never going to be a one year process anyway, and while it'd be nice to get that first overall guy, we still have a reasonable look at it. Furthermore, we stand to add a dynamic player to our organization no matter where we pick in the top 5.
So chill.

Since the trade deadline this team has played more inspired hockey. The wins have not always been there but the effort for the most part is. We seem to play better with all the youth in the lineup. It's encourging to see the prospects play and get a taste of life in the NHL and I hope it translates into a few of those players winning roster spots next season.

I would say the current young players aren't good enough based on what they have shown in junior, NCAA, AHL and to a certain extent the NHL. And not sure exactly what you mean when you think they are not good enough.
I think Reinhart/Horak could be 3rd liners for this team. Baertschi looks like a 1st/2nd liner. Brodie is a 2nd pairing maybe first pairing guy. Backlund weak 2nd line/strong 3rd line center. Don't think Hanowski does much more than 4th liner/AHLer.
Of course there is no proof that these guys are going to be better but I think most (if not all) reasonable/impartial people would say that Jones/Drouin/Mackinnon have a high likelihood of being better than any player on the roster now. In fact I don't really think there is much argument there.
Sure it is not guaranteed, I don't think anyone said it is, but the likelihood that they help us is more than a win against Detroit in a sub-.500 season in which the team didn't play that well.

Draft Pick

Tongue in cheek, if we wanted a top three draft choice we should have kept Iginla. The team really was listless prior to his departure.
Turning that page, the Flames are fun to watch again.
Glad to see Kipper play well in the win.

Backlund is finally proving he deserves a top 6 spot on this team.

No, he isn't. Right now he is a depth centre. Core players are relied upon to be the best players on your team. Regehr, Iggy, Kipper, Dion. Best players on the team.
Brodie is a stud. Sven will be a stud. Backlund may evolve into a core player, but as of right now, you do not build around him. At all. The rebuild is as much about finding a new core as it was shipping the old one out. And while Backlund may evolve into that, nothing he has done indicates that he is anything better than a support player. He's a nice player. You don't build around him.

Well Backlund this year has shown more than Baertschi has so I'm not sure why you're giving Baertschi a free pass and ignoring how good Backlund has been. Right now he is a depth centre? Nope, right now he is our best centre.
Am I the only one watching Backlund closely when I watch Flames games? I really don't get it. Tonight he was arguably our most dangerous forward. He battles well along the boards, shows a nose for the net, is giving and receiving passes, has had some nice goals too.
Crazy how underrated he is by some. Pretty sure next season will prove that out.
