I'd normally agree but it's hard not to get into that mindset when you see the pic of the bearded dude. Very similar backpack, carrying it a manner that could be deemed suspicious, appears to be alone, in the direct vicinity of the explosion and he even fits the profile (omg PC forumers get your pitch forks!!) of people who have done these types of attacks.
He picked a bad day to look and act sketchy as hell if thats not the guy.

Pretty far from a witchhunt? People are being circled as bombing suspects because they're carrying a backpack or not looking in the 'right' direction.
And I'll keep refreshing to see who keeps making an ass of themselves.

If I had a big backpack in a crowd that large, I wouldn't wear it on my back, for a few reasons:
1. Wearing it on my back would be inconsiderate of others around me, taking up more space than necessary, and because it's large and awkward and sticking off my back, it would greatly increase the chance that the slightest movement by me would end up smacking someone with the backpack. I'm sure we've all been on a crowded train or bus where someone was wearing a backpack knocking into people every time they moved.
2. In a large crowd there's a greater chance of pickpockets who might open the backpack without my noticing and remove my valuables from inside because I wouldn't be able to see them do it.
3. The counterpoint to #1. The backpack throws off your centre of balance, and when someone is a jerk who's wearing a backpack in a thick crowd, other jerks (like me) will use the backpack to throw the person off-balance as a not-so-subtle way to tell them to take it off. It doesn't take a lot of force to push someone around when they have 10 pounds of crap hanging off their back.

Outside of the backpack none of what you have created there has any basis. What's suspicious about the way he's carrying it? As I said above, I carry my bag like that frequently in crowds, as do many other considerate people. He does appear to be alone, as would many people who are at a marathon to watch their husband or wife finish the race. What profile does he fit? White guy?

But in this one, the guy in the black jacket and hat has taken off the backpack and looks like he is carrying it infront of him.

This is all true. I would probably be carrying it a similar way, depending on how heavy it was and whether or not I needed to get to stuff in there.
He's kind of holding it the way a man holds his wifes purse when she hands it to him...

This is exactly what police are doing. Someone had to do it and considering the situation, everyone that acted suspicious in that area on that day, at the time of the photo is going to have a rough couple of days. Thats what happens. Bad luck.
No one is advocating forming a mob and tearing this guy to shreds but in 2013 when you have tons of pictures floating around, people are going to start to look for clues on their own.

It's a big deal, but it needs to be done. They 100% need to find that guy ASAP, and ask him "Hey, where is your backpack?" then move on to their other suspects.

And this is evidence of what? Him being considerate of the fact that his backpack was smacking the people around him?
I do appreciate the use of a photo with the face blocked out. If you're going to play amateur detective at least avoid tarring someone in the process.

Well, the most eyes on the guys in these photos possible will identify them the quickest before the purp has the chance to hurt anybody else. So ya, they need to question this guy about the backpack simply based on the fact that it is similar to the one that exploded

This should be in the vigilante justice thread.

I guess i agree. I normally use the top handle on mine for that situation, which I guess is what makes that look odd.

The guy in the white hat in no way looks like he is about to commit an act of terrorism. He looks like he is talking casually with his friend (the guy in the blue jacket). Their also both wearing sporty trendy style Western clothes.
His backpack also looks like it has something in the back pocket. It doesn't look like one large object. The fact he also has an orange juice in his backpack, suggests that he is just there to watch the race. Why would he bring provisions with him to hang around the scene of his crime with a backpack full of volatile explosives? Whoever did this probably slipped in and out of the crowd and dropped off the pack as quickly as possible.
The only thing that makes the guy in the white hat suspicious is that him and his friend friend are brown. IE racism.

He has a backpack that is similar to the one that exploded and he appears to be their alone (as opposed to family or something like that). That is 100% enough reason for the police to try and find him to ask him a few questions.
Again, no one besides law officials should be trying to actually find this guy but I have no problem with people looking at pictures on their own and doing their stupid little MS Paint descriptions. Until the vigilantie aspect of this goes past that point, I'm all for it.
Who knows, maybe someone spots something that helps the police and saves people from another attack?'
Like I said earlier, if you were there, on that day, in that vicinity, you should expect to have to talk to cops and appear in these photos anyways. Bad luck but that's how it is.

Or what I'd probably look like if a friend said to me, "Hey, I'm running in the marathon and put a change of clothes in this backpack. Can you meet me at the finish line with it?"

Crowdsourcing crime scenes can be something to expect more commonly in the future. It's really not that different than police going to the public for tips. This is the sort of stuff you have to expect when everyone is connect digitally and the power of the Internet takes hold. Not much the authorities can do other than work with what is turned up. There is the chance it may help, and also the chance that it may hinder. Either way, it's happening.
