Shameful that we have a province openly admitting that nearly half of its highways are on the verge of being unrepairable, a medical system that cannot pay its doctors and an education system that cannot keep class sizes down due to lack of funding and we are actually going to hand these bozo owners hundreds of millions of dollars to further pad their own pockets.

So long as the two restaurant owners near the new building have a 5% jump in sales its all worth it!

I predict that the Edmonton arena district will be a relative ghost town 10 years after it's been built. Nobody actually wants to live in the shadow of a giant arena and all the traffic and hubub that that brings in. The revitalization benefits touted by building an arena are vastly, vastly overstated.

Not to bump for sake of bumping...but I would love to see an arena built with a glass roof. It would allow for arial shots of the game much like NFL football. Do you think that's even a remote possibility?

Only if you can find a way to get rid of the scoreboard... plus, lighting issues would be a concern as would sunlight. Direct sunlight would mean that more complex mechanical systems would need to be in place in order to accommodate consistent heating and cooling of the ice.

Don`t forget the other types of events it would impact as well, aside from hockey.

I think it would be too gimmicky and too expensive for its purpose.

Perhaps some kind of retractible shade?

That would probably be a requirement, yes. Plus, there`s two other factors you have to consider: the first is snow, as it would no doubt pile up on the roof creating additional weight on the glass and eliminating the view - which is the purpose of the roof to begin with. The second is light pollution - with Calgary becoming more stringent on light pollution, this type of feature might not jive with light by-laws and, ultimately, building code.

All just hypothetical. It`s a cool idea, just not really that practical or rational.

I'm really looking forward to any official information on this project, I'd even take a far off date for a press announcement at this point.

Coming up on 3 months from Ron MacLean's comments on hockey night in another week and a half, will be interesting to see if he actually had legit info and an announcement comes when the season ends.

Worst. Argument. Ever.
Sorry, I have to ask, I left Alberta in the summer of 2011 and I don't recall us being broke then. I recall a recession-driven deficit, but it came on the heels of a decade of huge surpluses.

Is Alberta really broke now? What the hell happened?

Depends on how you do it. Baltimore is a fine example to follow, but it is doubtful that Edmonton is smart or capable enough to do so. From Calgary's perspective, putting the new rink in Stampede Park renders any such discussion moot.

Same thing that always happens. We have resources and we ship them out. There should have decades ago been a plan in place to diversify the economy. Now they are having trouble even shipping the stuff out.

So the price goes up and Alberta is flush with cash. Down and they are scrambling.

No plan for the future equals tough times / sound like an organization you know?

He was specifically asked about a football field and pretty much said yes, that would be included. And it was at this point that he said it would NOT be a multi-plex type facility - football fields and hockey rinks do not fit into the same building (paraphrasing of course)

Can't remember what he said about an announcement timeline... 6 - 8 months maybe?
Just wanted to have this info in this thread. (I quoted from the Edmonton arena deal thread)

I will add any additional information I get from the STH/HH evening meeting on May 29th.

I'm really not sure where such a large complex would go. The site they had previously been favouring (just north of Stampede grounds between 12th ave and 10th ave), would simply not fit an NHL arena AND a football stadium, let alone a bunch of other buildings as well.

I am hoping that the football stadium can be suitable for use as a soccer stadium as well. I would love an MLS team here.

The other problem with the north Stampede location is that it is simply too tucked away from any real major roadways in there. If you could conceivably put an arena AND a football stadium in there.... transportation would get incredibly difficult to manage. It's simply too tucked away.

Most likely in the West Village area. Would work well since city has just made a redevelopment plan for the area, so it's getting a whole makeover anyway in regards of roadways and building types. And most importantly, there's direct transit access from the new Sunalta station.

Here's a post I made last summer, where I superimposed the footprints of a couple of buildings (the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale and the UConn Football stadium in Hartford) over a few different locations to see how well they could accommodate an arena and stadium.

http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...49#post3824949

I won't quote the whole thing (you can read it if you want), but here are the images:

1. East Victoria Park

2. Fire Park

3. West Village -- Greyhound Depot and GSL Chev-City

3. West Village -- Greyhound, GSL, Renfrew Chrysler

These are really the only locations that would be large enough; are potentially available for (re)development; and meet the "downtown" criteria. Firepark is not directly downtown, but its proximity to Deerfoot, Memorial, and the CTrain make it still easily accessible from downtown.

The land at the Fire Park is contaminated I believe... I don't see that location seriously happening.
