With that said, logic says it would be best for the Flames to lose.
Still, the Oilers aren't much better than the Flames. I expect a close 4-3 game either way.

I'm hoping for a win and a great effort by the Flames, but if they lose I won't be too upset. That's my mentality for the rest of the season.

So what's the lineup looking like for tonight? Given that this is floating out there:

@SCSUHUSKIES' Ben Hanowski will play his first game with the @NHLFlames tomorrow night against the @EdmontonOilers #HuskyAlum

If this is true, and Aliu is in as well.... the lineup could look very interesting.

I want a chance to get an elite player that we can be excited about for the next 15 years. I want that number one center that every cup winning team is built around. Screw the battle of Alberta. The battle that matters is the battle for Mackinnon. Anything less and I can easily see Feaster and co screwing it up and setting us back even farther.

your post represents everything that's wrong with the modern era hockey fan, and to me its really sad to watch.
If your cheering for your team to lose then you are really playing too much GM mode in sports based video games.
As for the Oilers
Gut the fracking creeps. If your team isn't making the playoffs, take them to hell with you.

This franchise deserves better than that and this year is their chance to do it. It's only eight-frickin-games. Do you really want to experience year 5 of missing the playoffs next year?
|
Wrong, I just understand that it takes more than one high draft pick to rebuild a club. Plus I just don't cheer for tanking. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

The scale of the animosity towards the Oilers expressed here is somewhat surprising. Those of us who lived through the Gretzky Oiler era remember the extent of the rivalry but at no time do I recall Flames fans calling for injury to Oiler stars of that era. Living in Calgary I remember receiving all kinds of souvenirs, newspaper articles and freebies from the good folks in our Edmonton office. The rivalry was serious but mixed with a touch of friendship. After all, the team is from Alberta. Over the last few years as the Flames continued their decline I have secondarily cheered for the exciting young Oiler players. I am sure that if they make the playoffs I will attach my hopes to their success. Additionally, as much as I want a high draft pick I have been unable to cheer for a Flames loss. If we win tonight I will be pleased for the young Flames. If we lose I will keep my fingers crossed for MacKinnon.

The bolded part shows me that you obviously got Kevin Lowe's memo. You know the one. The one that says any sentence referring to the Oilers must contain one or both of the adjectives "exciting" or "young". Makes me puke everytime I hear it. Why is it that even when there are younger teams than the Oilers you never hear them being fawned over by the media like the Oilers are?

Some of you have this "hate" thing really bad don't you? It's interesting how you make up stories to justify your foolishness.

If the internet existed back then as it does now, I have no doubt the vitriol between the two fanbases would make what you're seeing now look like a Kumbaya Conference.

People also buying into the "young exciting" Oilers thing is always hilarious. They aren't any more or less exciting then your average NHL team.
If you're going to be this grating, you have to do a better job of it.

Don't try to frighten us with this whole exciting young player thing,Teroy. Your sad devotion to Kevin Lowe's religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you enough clairvoyance to find the rebels' hidden fortress...

I don't want a team that can't even muster up enough gumption to strike back at the team that embarrassed them in their own rink. We don't have a good team and they aren't going to go on a big run beating much better teams with more on the line (just re-watch the Vancouver game to see why). However we CAN beat the Oilers and I would love to see our young guys learn how to get wins by working their tails off, so that when the top-end talent does come along it is surrounded by players forged by competitive fires, unlike the Oilers who have no idea how to compete.
The losses will come. Tonight it's Go Flames Go!

The only thing exciting about the Oilers is their young kids blundering about their defensive zone like blind grubs trying to find a grain of rotten rice.
As one of the least offensively capable teams in the league, they're not all that exciting.

I actually care about the big picture over meaningless wins over another loser organization. You can call that whatever you like.

I'm all for the rebuild and getting the best draft spot possible but I don't support "tanking". What ever spot they end up they need to take the best player possible. One player no matter what spot he's drafted is not going to make this team a annual playoff contender. It's going to take a few years of losing to get some top prospect. Thay are going to lose alot but not because their tanking but because there not a good hockey team.
