The Avs and Canes look as though they may not win another game this season. Plus with Florida in the mix, it may be 27th.
With our luck, probably get bumped down one spot from 4th to 5th and end up missing out on one of the big four too.
|
The Panthers have shown some try as of late and the Canes are on a slide but I don't see them losing out. Don't rule out the Lightning who seem to be overmatched most nights (+7 goal differential is truly puzzling for such a poor record). The Avalanche will not win another game this season so 30th is out of the equation but 29th is up for grabs and you can make an argument that the Flames may not win another game looking at their schedule. All is not lost yet.

I just had an awful thought...what if both the Blues and Pens make the conference finals?...then both their 1st rd picks are moved into the bottom 4 range 27-30. This was expected for Pittsburgh's pick, but I could see the Blues making a deep playoff run too.
I suppose it's not the end of the world, but I'd much rather that Blues pick was around 20th than 27th.

Say the season ends today and the lottery prooves out exactly the standings:
Colorado 1 Florida 2 Calgary 3
Presume Colorado takes Jones.
Would Florida trade with Calgary to take MacKinnon and Drouin by giving us a Jonathan Huberdeau? Would Calgary think MacKinnon Drouin are better and say no?

First overall to Colorado who takes Jones.
Second overall to Florida who take Drouin.
Third overall to Carolina who takes MacKinnon.
Fourth overall to Calgary who takes Barkov.
Not sure that I am entirely sold on him. That is why if Columbus finishes in the bottom 9 I would trade the fourth overall for their three first round draft picks. With that pick I take either Monahan or Lindholm.
Then I would trade the Penguins or Blues draft pick (whichever team goes farther in the playoffs) to Montreal for the Flames, Predators, and Canadiens second picks. If the Penguins/Blues pick is in the 27-30 range then I would also send our third round pick.
Instead of having four picks in the first three rounds, you could end up with seven picks in the first two rounds. If it is a deep draft then you should be able to find prospects that will fill up five of your future top nine positions up front and two top four defensemen.
Monahan
Lazar
Gauthier
Mantha
Mueller
Petan
Wheaton

Philadelphia and Tampa Bay are going to be right up on the cap.
They are both going to have top 10 draft picks.
What about deals for their first round picks for the Blues and Penguins first round picks.
#5 Tampa Bay pick for the lower of the Penguins and Blues pick with the Flames taking salary back with Malone ($4.5M for 2 years).
#8 Philadelphia pick for the higher of the Penguins and Blues pick with the Flames taking salary back with Timonen ($6M for one year).
Three top ten draft picks that would allow you to take all three secondary centers Barkov, Monahan, and Lindholm.

Cap teams are not going to trade ELC players that will be able to come in and contribute immediately in order to shed cap. Especially with two buyouts available this offseason.

Jonathan Huberdeau is a 19 year old stud centerman who will be a Calder finalist and likely winner this season.

Teams aren't going to give up top 10 picks to save money, especially not a team that is as rich as the Flames in Philly
How can someone even think that the Flyers would mortgage their future over 6 million dollars, for a useful player, that THEY SIGNED TWO MONTHS AGO TO THAT DEAL

Absolutely correct. Teams in Cap trouble are in cap trouble because they can afford to spend and if they could afford to spend then they can afford to issue buyouts rather then jettison a high draft pick.
If you want to look for teams to take advantage of you should look to teams with internal budgets (Islanders, Coyotes, etc. etc.) where the width of the gap between picks isn't so pronounced. That strikes me as potentially possible.

He's actually been a left winger since he was drafted.

I hear you for sure, but for Florida you get to draft the Centerman and the Left Winger who play on the same line. Is it totally out of the question? Possibly but hey maybe Florida might go there.
Don't get me wrong I also think Huberdeau is a stud, and although he has been playing lots of LW maybe he could go to center I am not sure.

As I read this thread it really reinforces that I have to trust the job the scouts do. They have way more insight on all the prospects and how they compare to each other.
It also scares me looking at past drafts and seeing how many sure fire stars fizzled out, and some undersized kid with skating issues turned into a big star.
Please work some magic John Weisbroad and Jay Feaster.

Combine that with a late season winning streak by the Flames and we end up drafting 11th.... that would be hilarious is a very sad kind of way.

I've watched ~20 Moosehead games this year, and I can tell you that the difference between Drouin and Mackinnon is much less than the point totals indicate. Mackinnon is more NHL ready and is stronger on his skates, Drouin has a clear skill advantage. Anyone who says Mackinnon is only succesfull because he plays with Drouin is full of it, as he was a top player and point producer as a rookie before Drouin got there. It will be a very difficult choice between the two if the Flames have to make it. I think both will be superstars in the NHL
