Drafting a kid at 18 is much more difficult than picking up someone like Giordano who is much farther ahead in his development curve. Guys like Giordano and Horak were not developed by the Flames, and that's where this organization has done so poorly over the years.
What? Giordano played two full seasons for the Flames' minor league affiliate. and has spent his whole NHL career with Calgary. Horak has played his two professional seasons between Calgary and Abbotsford. Who developed those two guys then if it wasn't the Flames organization?

If we take a Dman with our first, top 5, im done with the Flames for a while. Seth Jones maybe somwthing special but so are the others. Dmen take much longer to develope tho.
I'm not sure if anyone on this board takes too much stock in advanced hockey stats, but I'd have to agree with posters suggesting we take Mackinnon or even Drouin over Jones. The link I've posted gets into the history of drafting a Dman 1st overall vs. selecting a forward. Interesting analysis wherein he ultimately suggests that in general selecting a forward is best.
Furthermore, I see any proposal to get another top 5 pick slightly implausible without including Sven. He is NHL ready and I'd suggest that packaging him with the STL. 1st might do the trick. I feel that somehow getting Mackinnon and Drouin would be a huge turning point for this franchise.

So it's two draft picks and three and a half developed guys total. Either way, it's inexcusable and it's a big reason why the team is where it is.

Would anyone trade Bart or Gaudreau and a first to get a second top three pick? Are these guys that much better or sure deals?
No. I think it would be impossible to get into the top three.
BUT, assuming our pick is in the top four, and we ended up taking a non-centre (Drouin or Jones) I would definitely try to move up into the 5-8 range to try get Lindholm or Monahan if they were still available. It would still take a large package, but IMO would be worth it to make sure we get a high end centre out of this draft without passing over the higher end talent like Jones or Drouin.
I could see the Flames being hesitant to do this though. Not having a second rounder, I would guess we'll try and hold onto at least one of the later first round picks....

Not sure if its been mentioned in this thread yet... I think Bob McKenzie said 10/10 scouts asked MacKinnon vs Jones, said they would take MacKinnon. Unless we draft 1st overall, we got to shot. If we have the 1st overall, go with MacKinnon. Seth would be awesome. I like what I see from Druoin, but after that, I really have no clue.

^ No Russians that high in the draft should be a rule. They are not guys to build a team around.
There's rumblings from European scouts over on HF that Nikushkin should be a top 2 pick he's looking that good. The only reason he'll fall is based on the interview and flight risk. Anyway, he looks like he could be a dominant center if it works out. The size and skill are undeniable.

Datsyuk and Malkin are the only two russians in the league i would build my team around. Maybe Kovalchuk... but that is iffy.
The Flames can not miss this pick and for every Malkin there are multiple Filatov's and Zherdev's.

He's a LW though. I'd prefer Mackinnon or Bakrov over him and we take a D-man with the other two picks. If we did take Mikushkin though i would understand but i would be upset.

If he drops, I think the Flames give serious consideration to picking him up. One of the positives of having more than one 1st round pick. I don't think they touch him with their top 5 pick. Too much at stake for the Flames right now.
One wrinkle is that Columbus has 3 first round picks and could have the same idea...draft a quality guy with their early pick and gamble on one of their later picks.
I would be disappointed if they picked Jones over MacKinnon.
I could be wrong but I have a feeling the Flyers are really high on Jones.
I wonder if the Flames had the third pick (with Drouin and MacKinnon off the board), and say the Flyers had the 5th pick if they would move the 5th (Barkov/Lindholm) and Couturier for the 3rd (Jones).

He is looking that good, I agree.
However, 2 year contract in the KHL + NHL ELC max = incentive for him to stay in the KHL. I really think he will drop due to that. I think he will be elite though.

Probably unrealistic and a reach but I can dream.
That would be a huge overpayment. A 2nd to move up that much would be a huge payment.
Plus I can't see Colorado passing on Jones and can't see two teams other than Florida and Colorado finishing lower than us.
