I"m sure quite a few teams would. Gio of last year was better then a draft pick.

Well Gio + two late firsts might make them change their mind. If they were going to draft a defensmen, they'd get a pretty decent defensmen already plus 2 other picks

Whose that one guy in the pic? Daniel Tkachuk?
Valeri Bure, Jason Weimer, Jarome Iginla, --No Idea--, Cory Stillman and Todd Simpson.

This is what a lot of people wanted... well, not exactly. We all knew that blowing it all up would result in bad times. I think I can speak for everybody when I say we can accept losing if they displayed good effort. Last night there were way too many players who looked like they were trying too hard to not try at all. Like Feaster said, if they didn't want to be there they should have told him before yesterday.
Why was Horak benched? Should not have happened. He was trying, so keep giving him ice time. The team was already well on its way to losing so let the guys who are trying hard have the ice time, even if they are making mistakes. Let them try hard, make their mistakes, and point out to them what they can do to improve upon those mistakes.

I know people keep stating that gio, glencross, tanguay, etc, etc, couldn't have been traded as you need players to play this year and thru-out the rebuild.
Well last night serves as an excellent example of why we should have just whatever could for some of these guys.
I think last night is right up there as one of the more embarrasing modern/post-lockout nights for the flames franchise. Getting whooped by a touchdown (minus the extra point) on home ice to your biggest rival is right up there wiht losing to the hawks after being up 5-0, and the boston beat down.
I am not looking for a hercules type effort and wins against better teams (the oilers have better forwards at every position, better dmen #1-#6, better starting and backup goaltending, better special teams, better coaching). However, 4-2, 5-1 losses can be expected on most nights, but giving up 8 goals on home ice?
I would like to throw the towel in on this coaching staff also. They don't preach the kind of game that enforces a solid 3-zone game. I'd be willing to see Ward be given the reigns for the next 2 seasons.
Positives: I am loving watching backlund. Keep it up kid. Hopefully you get some guys to play wiht soon, starting with Baertchi, asap. Brodie, very solid. I hope he progresses in his ability to be quicker with his decisions with the puck at the point in the offensive zone. I feel he hesitates too often, hence, most of his shots are being blocked by the opposing forwards too easily. Nothing major though.
Anyone know why Horak didn't play much in the 3rd period. Was it because we wanted our offensive powerhouses to make the comeback when it was 5-2??

If i scored an 8th goal against the oilers or canucks id celebrate the exact same way.
Saying that id also go out my way to intentionally hurt players if they were embarrassing my team like that

Worst Game Ever!!!
I was there and to add insult to injury was the invasion of Oil fans. Drunken obnoxious Oil fans, horde of them. I don't mind when the Canucks or an original 6 team comes to town and generates lots of fans and jerseys, thats fun, fair and hockey. But last night in second level row 10 so many flames fans had left we we're invaded by "walk downs" who took the seats. Man, were they drunk. Screaming drunk and not funny at all. I like the McMan stadium crowds when the "Green" invade. Its' a ton of fun and good humour. This was NOT like that at all.
I don't want to sound like a poor looser because the Flames were truly awful but the drunken, classless Oil fans really need to stay north were they belong where they can enjoy their dancing pom pom girls, announcer from the 50's, and puke on their own feet.
I grew up a Habs fan because I lived there, but converted to a Flames fan after the 04 run.
I really appreciate lots of other teams and watch many via NHL Game Centre, AND even watch the Oil and really enjoy their top lines in actions. BUT after last night, because of "those" fans and their classless behaviour I am now officially an Oil hater.

I was surprised that Horak was benched.
Tanguay had at least 2 good hits that surprised me.
Felt sorry for MacDonald.

Hartley has to go unless the goal is to tank like the Oilers did and pick 1st overall multiple years. Bring in Ward as at least he knows defensive structure and would be a hell of a lot better bringing in the rookies. I don't want another year like this year where he is destroying the confidence of young players like Sven all the while giving veteran players all the ice time on a team that gives up 4+ goals every game.
|
Why bring in Ward now when the Flames are barely even a team - the core is gone and they have to start creating an new identity from scratch. He's a good coach and has a history of winning with young players in the AHL, so why put him in a position to fail? Firing the current coach won't do anything; they aren't going to be a winning team for a while because of major roster flaws, and that should be a foregone conclusion by now.

Was just going to comment also on the no hits stat. While I generally dislike Tanguay's effort, he clearly had one good hit, and likely should have been credited with a second.

You just answered why it's a good time to bring in Ward. May as well start the identity from scratch with a coach that has a history winning with minimal talent. An identity of a hard working team that plays good team defense. It's how lesser talented teams like the Coyotes and Predators have overachieved over the last half decade. I don't see the point of bringing rookies in next season so they break into the league playing on a team with no defensive structure. Keenan killed Phaneuf's game this way and you build up players by teaching them the right way to play in the NHL not the wrong way and try and correct the mistakes later in their careers.
Also as has been mentioned Hartley just doesn't like to play the kids. In a nothing blowout game he staples Horak to the bench. What the hell does that serve? That's how he killed Sven's confidence as how is a player supposed to improve or even knows what he has to improve on when he's stapled to the bench? I am very worried about the prospect of starting next season with Sven and say Reinhart and MacKinnon (if the Flames are so lucky) with Hartley behind the bench considering what happened this year with callups and Sven.

I think it makes a ton of sense to bring in Ward.
But I would be incredibly surprised if it happened. Hartley seems like Feasters guy.
I'm not sure how much of the blame Hartley deserves this year. This is a bad team with no centers. Is it the staffs fault that they are as bad as they are?
I honestly am not sure. With all of the player stuff that has gone on this year it seems like the coaching staff has flown under the radar.
