Win cup = 30th overall
5th and 1st round loss = 26th overall

5th and SCF loss = 29th overall
So the pick will likely be 27th - 30th

Hmm... bugger.
So there's no way to cheer for the Pens to lose-out the regular season, then win the cup for Iginla's sake.
Well, 25th ain't much better than 30th anyway.

Far for certain though. Would really require all the favourites to make it to the conference finals.
30th-Stanley Cup Winner
29th-Stanley Cup Finalist
28th/27th-Conference Finalists
26th-15th -Based on records of the teams out after 2 rounds. A President Trophy winning team bumped out in the first or second round, like the Canucks last year, would claim 26th.
Edit: And actually, division leaders are also bumped up. So division winners Florida and Boston, despite having worst records then Nashville last year and being first round exits, still picked 24th and 23rd. Nashville, 5th overall in the Standings just based on record picked 21st (well technically Flames did but with their original pick). Now of course the Penguins aren't in any danger of losing their division title so it's all pretty moot.

Put me in the ###### category then because I want a forward

I think the flames after trading off major assets in Iggy, and more specifically the 30-minute-a-game Bouwmeester are a worse team.
If they send Kipper and some other supporting cast out today, they're likely right there alongside florida as the worst team in the league - they'll basically be icing an almost AHL quality team.

Don't sell them short, they might not be a great AHL team but they're still AHL quality.

Look at the impact defensemen in the league drafted top 3. There aren't many. In fact Drew Doughty might be the only one left right now and Chris Pronger the other. Elite scoring talent is harder to aquire later than elite defensemen. Draft BPA but given a roughly equal top 3 go with the center. Most of the defensemen taken in the top 3 do not become elite talents. We have one of them on our team right now.
Now we need a top pairing defensemen but for me even Barkov vs Jones would be a toss up. I agree that you should never draft on need but we need to factor in the difficulty to draft that position and probabilty that the player meets his potential into the equation in addition to raw skill.

Updated standings after tonight's most recent debacle (not counting the MIN/SJ game, which isn't over yet, but doesn't affect the Flames)

Under the old rules, the last place team had a ~50% chance of picking first overall. With the new rules, it's only 25%.

Go Panthers!!!! I am officially on board for the drive. I just don't think we can pass Colorado.

If we end up last, we take Jones unless Colorado gives us a king's ransom to move up.

Lets say we don't get in that top tier, who do you think this scouting group takes at number 5?

What's all this 5 talk about? You can still only move down 1 spot right? I'm feeling pretty confident in that 1 or 2 pick right now.

As bad as the Flames are I don't think we'll be Florida or Colorado bad by the end of the year. I think there is an outside chance we pick fourth.

This simulation seems entirely reasonable.
I say Colorado wants Jones bad, so you finish last, hopefully pick ahead of them after the lottery, and reach out to the Avs to let them know you're willing to make a deal with them, to swap positions with them so they can select him, in exchange, they give up their 2nd round pick.
Then take your two additional firsts, and trade them for another top 10 selection.

I'm still hopeful that Colorado has 2 or 3 more wins in them. Florida probably not.
I guess I'm just extrapolating the effort we saw tonight to the rest of the games and assuming losses.
