1st rounder - like it
2 meh prospects - okay. Increases the odds of finding a diamond in the rough
$0 in cap space - awesome!
With compliance buyouts, cap going down and cap rich teams being poor in real $'s cap space will reign king this summer! I love that we got 2 first rounders and have avoided taking on any deadweight.

Why is that a bad thing? He's an RFA.
Feaster has said that we have some young 18/19 year old prospects but no one in that 22-26 year range.
1st rounder will be another 18 year old, these two prospects fill a gap in our development system.

Unless they suddenly think they can still contend and start loading on free agents.
With this suddenly free 7 million, what should the Flames do? All FAs are old? Do we give offer sheets for young RFAs, that could be a disaster.
That said I do not dislike the trade. I like the 1st rounder and as other have said, it could packaged with something else.

So don't sign old UFA's or young RFA's because both are bad?
This site is going to be a treat for awhile.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Flames go hard after both MacKinnon and Drouin, stocking up picks so they can get two high picks like Burke did with Sedins.

Good enough return considering Bouwmeester was a disappointment outside of this season. If they can swing another trade or two, we should be in good shape come draft time.
With the cap going down in the offseason, the Flames should be able to land some decent players via salary dump trade or free agency this summer.

For comparison, Brian Campbell was traded for Rostislav Olesz ($3 million in dead cap space). I know Campbell had more years left on his deal, but to get a 1st rounder for an extremely overpaid defenceman isn't the worst return for Bouwmeester.

Well I think management could have handled the 7mill for a couple of years so I don't think that's a big deal. Worst case we could get the 30th pick next year. The goalie prospect in all likelyhood will never probably be the number 1 goalie. Jaybo is playing his best hockey since coming here you would think his return would be bigger or even taking some salary back to get a elite prospect would have been better.
Would you rather have a 29 yr old defencemen that can long many minutes that can teach upcoming dmen like brodie or potentially no NHL players.

Flames appear to be trying to give themselves numerous options for net.

I think Feaster's approach to goaltenders is by shear overwhelming of the odds.
Goaltending is so hard to predict I almost would expect Feaster to not trust it period. He seems to want to take goaltenders late and often (Brossoit, and comments that he wanted to take Gillies later, but the rate they were going, they couldn't). His trades seem to indicate the same: That he wants a large goaltender prospect pool and hope one of them strikes lightning.

Feaster on Sportsnet now.
Feaster approached Bouwmeester same time as Iginla.
Bouwmeester provided a list.

Give me a break. What evidence do you have of Feaster, Weisbrod and Button making bad picks since they've come into the organization?
Name one of Feaster's picks that you have solid evidence was a bad pick?

Yes, but that is why the trade deadline isn't always the greatest time to deal. The number of potential trading partners is limited. When a player still has term beyond this season, I would prefer to wait until the draft.
Not that I hate this deal, but it probably could have been better.
