furthermore nobody is saying the Flames are great, this is about how long the Oilers will be bad for...I mean they are the worst team in NHL history over a 3 year stretch, its not like this isn't a fair question

Nice cherry pick of the stats there.
Schultz (first year in league) -11 .47ppg
Bouwmeester -11 .45ppg

The Oilers will finish with more points than Calgary this season and may make the playoffs.
This thread was a bad idea when I first saw it but there's a similar one up at Oilfans.
Let the trash talking continue !!!
Personally, I'm waiting for a good gif war...

The problem with the Oilers is they have to leap frog a bunch of teams and they probably don't hold a tie breaker with anyone with their wins in regulations, so I wouldn't count those chickens yet. They might not "trend" so well when their scouting group needs to fend for themselves instead of picking up the hockey news draft special and hang on the cusp of a playoff position because of the way the team is built.
Bottom line is when will they be considered a decent team? I would think that back to back playoff seasons at the minimum would be needed. What would you consider they need to accomplish to lose the loser stigma?
|
Probably the playoffs.
Like the Leafs.
Leafs have been out for 9 straight seasons I believe. Oilers are in their 7th.

The Ottawa Senators in the late 90's I believe are the worst team 3 yr stretch I believe. Quebec had a way worse record too. Edmonton's the worst this millennium though.

3 straight #1 picks and you were shooting for 20-24th? haha.
Will you dare venture into the 18s and 19s next year?? risky stuff! Like a naked short sell on Amazon stock!

I never said I was shooting for 20-24th.
Also, you don't really think this is a straight-line progression, do you?

is that enough though? If they make the playoffs one year and are out the next is that progression or one fluke season?
I still think before they are considered the good “special” they need consecutive post season appearances. Until then imo they are all hype.

If the local media has turned on them how long until the national media follow and call them what hey are...a horrible team with no plan.

they have a plan, just a CRAPPY one.
Team need 1: Goaltending
dubnyk is ok, and may be the answer... let's just stick with him rather than getting a proper goalie (Khabibulin sucks) who can share the load and go the tandem approach until dubnyk becomes the bonafide start.... FAIL.
Team need 2: Size and Grit
let's keep drafting undersized skill guys. Let's use the waiver wire and trades to get 6th pairing dmen and 4th line guys (sutton, vandermeer, jones, brown, etc, etc) and hope that 4th line /bottom pairing grit can substitute the lack of these elements in the top lines..... FAIL
Team need 3: Defense
what? we went out and got shultz? oh, ya, and klefbom is SICK.

I'm sure Schultz regrets nothing. It's pretty obvious that the Oilers, in their over the top, call in all the legends pursuit of a College free agent, pretty much told Schultz he could just go out and play however the hell he wants with no worry of accountability.
Get paid a ton, hold the hammer over the franchise that dug to the bottom of the well and bent over backwards to get you, and play exactly how you wanna play.

Plus he's putting up 0.5 ppg playing that style, which likely means he'll stick in the leauge/get raises
