Oh how I wish the Flames would/could snag these "big name" college UFAs with a 7th rounder when they get the chance. I know I know, hindsight's 20/20.

Well, we are going to have two of the last five or so picks in the draft this year (Ducks, Hawks), I wouldn't be surprised if we select college players with them.
Also, Deblouw was our 7th round pick at last years draft, and if we hadn't drafted him, the way he seemed to progress this season, he would likely have become a highly sought after college FA in a couple seasons.

@DarrenDreger: Still waiting for official word on Dan DeKeyzer's decision, but teams involved in the process believe Detroit is the destination of choice.

Dekeyser and other college UFAs were passed over in 3 consecutive drafts by every team. Dekeyser didn't really garner any interest until he was 21-22 years old

Don't think college guys are available to be drafted for 3 straight years. There is a 2 year window to draft them from how I understand the rules. After that they are free agents.
Could be wrong on the particulars but I think that is how it works.

Why even hold meetings seems like he needed to feel special like Schultz.

So when's the press conference from Feaster to say "We did our best, and ALMOST had him..."

Well Jay and "Silent" Bob got a trip out east together...Jay had nothing better to do 6 days before the trade deadline, and the coach may as well take a day off too, right? They can report back saying the made the attempt to keep the box checked for "doing all possible to help the team". While he's gone, King takes the lead on the Iginla story and made it worse.
Good times all around.

If the Flames didn't send anyone and most other teams did I bet many on here would criticize it too. Cell phones exist you know.

Good pick up for Detroit. Good on the Flames for at least trying, never hurts to put in the effort.

Everyone knew he was going to Detroit. Im really hoping the Flames go after Nate Schmidt, granted ive only seen him play twice but from various reports he seems like the kind of dman we need.

It just seemed very late in the interview process for one, and for two, other teams like the Oilers sent Lowe and MacTavish...not the GM and the coach.
With 6 days before one of the biggest trade deadlines for this franchise and the day before a game, to have those guys go out there for a day trip just seemed a little odd.
Why not King and Conroy after the Chicago game on Tue, when you're basically out there (he was in Toronto IIRC) already?

Probably the biggest decision the kid has made to this point in his life, and will effect him drastically going forward. He has every right to look at every option, even if he was leaning in a certain direction from the start.

I thought it was a great idea to have the coach there, he's going to be the one who really controls his ice and will be dealing with him on a daily basis.
I'd much rather have the coach there then some special assistant who may never see him ever again after signing.
Moot point though, as it seems he had his mind made up already.

exactly. Plus Schultz stated that talking to Ralph Krueger was a key aspect in his decision to sign in Edmonton. Sending Hartley to talk to DeKeyser is hardly a bad idea.

Perhaps Feaster will ask for DeKeyser as part of the package for Bouwmeester.
