FFS, do people really think the Flames had even an ounce of leverage here? Good lord.

Of course they had leverage. Up until last night they had 3 teams fighting over Iggy. None of them new that Iggy was going to chose Pitt.

Do i think they would have gotten a home run? Hell no, that was years ago.

Do i think a more experienced GM could have gotten a better return than a 1st and 2 prospects that have a long way to go just to play in the NHL? Yes i do.

Quite possible, actually probable, that Boston could have been pressed into giving more, but at the end of the day Iginla wants a Cup. The reason Boston would have been pressed is that Pittsburgh + Iginla is head and shoulders the favorite, and if your motivation is to win a Cup why would you okay a trade that at best puts you on a team that is co-favorite?

Bless you Pierre. You always find silver linings.

Now can your namesake be our GM?

I wonder if the Flames were ever offered Joe Morrow before he was dealt to Dallas. Morrow and a first rounder (maybe even a second) sure sounds a heck of a lot better than the package we received.

I see what you're talking about. My mistake. I took the op to mean that "look at everything that Gretzky was traded for... Iggy should have gotten the equivalent"

I think we were fortunate to get what we did for Iggy as he is definitely past his expiry date. We should have traded him 3 years ago.

Trading Iggy at this point in his career was never going to garner a prime piece for our rebuild. The player we take with our number 1 pick this year will be the most important for us by far.

Well they traded him to Dallas for Morrow, who should have brought less than Iginla did in return. Ergo wouldn't Pittsburgh offer more than just Morrow for Iginla? And obviously Joe Morrow was on the block, and Sherro had to have been in discussions with the Flames for at least a couple weeks. So if their offering him to Dallas, why wouldn't they offer him to Calgary as well?

Unless of course you believe that Morrow is the player Pittsburgh wanted more out of the two, and was unwilling to offer Joe Morrow in a deal to the Flames.

I think it's very reasonable to assume Joe Morrow was offered to the Flames at some point, but Feaster/ownership probably didn't want to make the deal so soon.

Anyone else curious what Chiarelli has to say here in eight minutes? Probably going to slam the Flames pretty hard I imagine.

Interesting (or not) to note:

Mike Matczak, who currently plays for the Heat, was a suggested signing to Ward by Weisbrod as a reinforcement. Both Matczak and Agostino went to Yale. Perhaps Weisbrod saw one while scouting the other?

"We thought we had a deal in place, and the player with the NMC chose another team"

He has nothing to slam the Flames about.

That would be incredibly surprising. What did the Flames do to deserve being slammed?

People need to actually take a look at the Boston deal. It was downright awful.

1) Conditional First: WTF? Boston has cap issues. If Iggy doesn't light it up, they aren't offering him a good contract, and he is not re-signing there. Even then, Boston still needs to re-sign a starting goalie and backup goalie, which will probably combine for 5-6 mil in cap space used, which makes it impossible for them to sign Iggy unless he takes a massive discount.

2) Potential bottom pairing d-man....The Flames have about a dozen of those in their system now. They're virtually worthless and tend to walk after not working out: see Pelech.

3) Borderline Russian prospect. He can join all those other borderline top 6 Russian players in the NHL....oh no wait, those no longer exist. It's 2013, and they all play in the KHL now. There are only 22 Russian players in the NHL, and none of them are journeymen or struggling players. Russians only play for their pay-day these days. That means they become 3+ mil players right out the gate, or they go back to Russia for 3+mil, and I don't blame them. However, you don't put stock in them either.

So basically, the Boston deal was Iggy for Negrin or Pelech.

You could see a significant deal with Edmonton in the next few days. Not as substantial as Iggy, of course, but Boston needs to step up to the plate now and they're talking.

I generally agree with this, but a conditional pick being included would have hurt his value as a free agent, so that part of the Boston deal could have been a factor in his decision.

So then the Pittsburgh deal is basically Iggy for a 1st.

I do agree the Boston deal with a conditional 1st is awful and likely then on par with the Pittsburgh deal.
