if i remember correctly, i don't believe ownership were all that happy losing Phaneuf, and it may have been one of the reasons Sutter was fired. it doesn't matter if he was pressured to win now, he still made the deals and signed off on them. he was also terrible at drafting and assessing young talent
he's a fantastic coach and is one of the smartest guys in the league at ice level, very few people can get as much out of their players as him. but he lacks the big picture mentality to build a successful team

No one could know that for sure apart from Meehan, Feaster and Iginla. At least Ray Sherio shouldn't be in any privledged position to know for sure that Iginla has only 4 teams on his list.
The only way this is the case is if Feaster comes out and tells Sherio that. In which case he should probably be let go for having one of the worst negoitating tactics of any GM.
Morrow also had an NTC, and Dallas didn't get raked over the coals like we did.

A lot of people in both organizations knew about this deal. Bob McKenzie was saying last night multiple people from Boston kept saying "it's done". I think plenty of people leaked and were talking about this.

Sutter is not blameless, not at all. BUT, we have very clear indications that this ownership group meddles in the affairs of the GM, but somehow in the Phaneuf deal they just let it happen? I don't buy it.
Anyway if I'm a Pittsburgh fan I'd be pretty much jumping for joy, getting a character guy in Iggy for what likely amounts to not much, yea they walked away like bandits on this one.

god Sutter was an idiot his last few years as GM

that's an interesting perspective that maybe i can hold some hope that maybe these 2 who and who's that 1 of them is actually in 3 years or less legit.
Maybe fate is kind to us instead of what appears to be a fleece job on the surface.

I think Morrow's value is about a first.
So the first equals Morrow
Dallas also gave up a third and got a fifth back
Flames got two additional prospects.
So the question is - does not having to send a third+the two kids equal the value gap between Morrow and Iginla.
Not sure - but its close.

I'm not so sure that Joe Morrow = 1st round pick right now. He is a bit further on in development and has developed nicely, so his value should be higher than a first round pick. He is much closer to making an impact on Dallas than the 1st round pick is for the Flames.

Iggy can win his cup next year when he re-signs with another team. The Pens fans smugness is truly a piss-off.

Pitt will win their division. I believe that means that the pick will be no better than 25 or 26 even if they lose in the first round.
So I would rather see Iginla win the cup

Perhaps but not sure I care too much about closeness.
Let's be honest - the Flames need some home runs.
Morrow isn't going to be a home run.
Chances are the late 1st won't be either - but maybe it will be.
It is a bullet in the chamber. They need more of those.
The franchise wasn't going to turn around on the acquisition of Morrow. I think the only thing he has is name recognition from being included in rumors.

Not really. I think Morrow is probably worth a mid first rounder. He is roughly akin to acquiring a David Rundblad when he was getting traded.
We both know that this first rounder is worth #26-#30. Anything else would be very surprising.

Agree to disagree - in this draft specifically I don't think Morrow was worth a mid pick.

The only thing the Penguins are guaranteed is 15-16 regular season games and minimum 4 playoff games with Iggy. Why would they give up more for that?
Feaster didn't really have much leverage on this deal.

|
Yes, that's exactly what happened. It's not the case that the Flames and the Bruins had an agreement in principle, subject to approval from Jarome, which they were advised, and that the approval did not come.
It got "screwed up" because the Bruins jumped the gun, the Flames kept their mouth shut the whole time.

I may be the only one thinks that the return for Iginla was actually appropriate and a good deal for Flames. I do not know what some were expecting to get.

When compared to the option that Iginla could have looked at them being 6pts out and still in the hunt and going for it one more time, and then signing elsewhere in the summer, this was a great alternative for the Flames.
I think the return's decent. Not a knock out of the park but not anything to get in a panic about either. If this was the return and he had a year left on the deal, it'd be pitchfork time.

They should be ecstatic and good for them and good for iginla. It's going to make my spring all that more exciting cheering him on to win that elusive cup.
