Its different not wanting a trade, but saying you will violate a contract you signed is kinda low.

So who's going to lead the starting of a bonfire and the burning of Kipper's furniture? Make sure you get the baby cradle!

He seems like the type of guy who is not in it for the money, and would be just as happy to ride off into the sunset as opposed to doing something he doesn't want to.

I understand about trying to make unbiased decisions and not let emotions get in the way, but come on, if anybody has earned an exception to that rule, it's this guy. He has 100% earned to have his say in the twilight of his career. Good for you Kipper!!

I don't think this rumour is true at all, but i do not agree with your post.
He signed a contract that was clearly made with the intention of him retiring in the last year. The only year that they could trade him and get an asset back was this year and that's why it was put in his contract. He has not been doing "charity work" for the flames, he has been getting paid. If this is true and i highly doubt it is, he needs to honour the contract.
If he really wants to stay home with his kids, which is fine by me, then he should reitre. Not sure why he would want to stay for the rest of the year anyway? Once the trades start happening Kipper could be facing 40 shots a game with a GAA of over 4. Not a nice way to finish your career.

Isn't that par for the course in the NHL? We just had a hiatus because of the owners trying to get out of contracts they gave to players.

It's sad to see the blind hate from some hearsay on hockey central.
Personally, I think Kipper is the key to facilitating a faster rebuild, and would like to see him sign an extension.
I'm scared of the possibility of him not playing next year for the flames.

If you're going to bring up his contract that means it should be honoured by both sides.
He's done great for the Flames in the past but he hasn't done it for free. He was paid and paid well. The fact that he was the only one who actually cared on some nights is all the more reason for him to want to go to a playoff team. He can't do this and say it's something he's earned the right to do, he earned the right not to be traded in prior years but to make a threat like that is just dirty.
I really hope this isn't true and he's traded.
|
I put way more weight into the argument of honoring his contract given that he played hard every night and never complained when the losses piled because Dmen left him hung out to dry or he wouldn't get any offensive support from his team or he never had an adequate backup to give him some rest, the list goes on and on. So, yes, I'd say he has more than fulfilled his contract and if he wants to use a "loop-hole" to retire a Flame and not be a rental player, good for him. If anyone on the team has "fulfilled his contract" it's Kipper.

Has this been confirmed by the Flames,Kipper, or his Agent?
The speculation surrounding his final year is absolutely puzzling.

If this does happen, it gives the OK for players around the league to throw hissy fits and not honour their contracts. A contract is as important the day it's signed as the day it ends. If a team were to all of sudden just say that they weren't going to pay a player because they didn't want him, everyone would think it was terrible. Now a player does that and people are saying things like "well he's done so much for the team" Well what about everything the team has done for the player? If it weren't for the Flames, Kipper probably would have never got a chance to be a starter, he would have never made the money he's made and he wouldn't have the life he has to day.
If this happened to another team, we'd all be saying how bad it was.

That what jumps out at me as well. It is easy to speculate from this rumour that Kipper has told the Flames what his intentions are.
I still expect him to be here next year and at that time, he'll debate whether he wants another contract or not. But we shall see.

That's totally fair, but he should just retire if true. The Flames are paying him, and part of the value of that paycheck right now includes the fact the he's a movable asset. If he wants to take that away, he shouldn't be getting paid either.
Sounds like he's a man ready to move on to the next stage of life which is cool. So do it and retire, stop collecting valuable cash from the Flames if you aren't prepared to do everything they are paying you for, including the potential of being trade bait.

It is fully in Kipper's right to not report to another team. He signed a contract with the Flames to play hockey, and if he does not want to work else where (probably does not need to) then fine.
It probably limits the number of teams that would try to trade for him, but he could be traded to NYI and they could use his cap hit, while only paying $1MM and they wouldn't even have to suspend him - just pay him to stay home.
I am fine with Kipper staying here until the end of his contract (and reupping for a few more years at a discount to stay in Calgary).

So where in his contract is it stated that he's going to have elite defensmen infront of him? He hasn't "more than fulfilled his contract" he hasn't even finished his contract! I really don't care what he's done in the past, the past won't make us winners in the present or the future. He's under contract and should honour it, that's what he gets paid to do.

Remember when we used to make fun of the oilers for being delusional for thinking they had something special over there? Now people are thinking we could make these magical runs with a team that can't get it done when there is no pressure. Accepting our fate as a non playoff team (AGAIN) and wanting the most to come of it may not be a popular choice but its a more logical one.
