Rick could tell Michonne that he told a few people about the Governor's proposal and Merle took it upon himself to carry out their end of the bargain. Michonne might believe it although there are a few people in the prison that knew the decision was made to sell out Michonne only to have Rick get cold feet.
He did take upon himself. He told Michonne about the "deal" and that he knew Rick wouldn't have the stone to do it, so he was going to do it himself. That's where the whole dialogue about being turned into a killer came from. Not to mention it was Michonne who said "we can just go back". Then it was later confirmed when Rick told everyone about the terms and he decided it wasn't right and that both Merle and Michonne had gone missing.

Merle playing Motorhead, slowly gathering a pile of Walkers and leading them to the Governors men was pretty bad ass. One of the cooler moments on the show.
Don't forget the whiskey. Can't forget the whiskey!
I don't even know where he got that bottle from. That's how bad ass Merle was. Hot wires a car with one hand, and somehow makes booze appear when required.

Wasn't he parked right outside a bar when he started drinking and blaring the music?

I wasn't clear. I meant that Rick doesn't have to admit to Michonne that he agreed with the Governor's proposal and then chickened out. He can just say he told Merle about the deal and he took it upon himself to go ahead with it. That way, hopefully, Michonne doesn't come back with a grudge against Rick and others in the group.
Of course, Michonne lopping off Rick's head with her kitana in the season finale would be a twist many would not see coming...

If anyone saw the sneak peek at the end of the Talking Dead, the Governor's forces seem to have been barely dented with Merle's actions. Seems like they have an entire platoon at hand to deal with the prison.
During Rick's speech near the end to his group, I was struck by how small and weak they appeared. Rick, Herschel, Glen, Maggie, Beth, Carl, Carol, the baby... So, two men, one senior with one leg, three woman, a kid and a baby. I understand Darryl and Michonne were missing from the meeting, but that's far from an army...
Sure wish Tyrese wouldn't have been chased off. 3 more men and 1 more woman would sure look good on Team Rick right now.

They interviewed Michael Rooker on the Talking Dead last night. Normally I'm pretty meh about the show, but man is he an interesting guy. I noticed when a lot of actors talk about their characters, they talk about them as a 3rd person. Michael just kept saying "I" and "me" as if he really was Merle.
He said in "his" head, it was never a turn of conscience. He said he sorta had the plan to ambush the group the entire time. Storm the base like a beach front. Kill as many as he could and see if he could get out if alive. So likely he just used kidnapping Michonne as an out.
He also said everything he did was always for him and his brother. I believe he said "Durl and Murl... no.... Murl and Durl". Hahah
I hate to see Merle go. He was always an interesting character. Michael Rooker is also a good actor and will be missed. Hopefully next season they can add some new characters that can carry a scene like Merle did in this season. Or like Morgan did that one episode this season.
I have to post this here since TBQHs thread about In the Flesh got very little notice, as a fan of anything zombie I just got through watching the first 2 episodes of "In the Flesh" a BBC post zombie apocalypse drama.
Good thing too since its only 1 episode left of the Walking Dead and this new series can keep me full of zombie goodness for the summer.

I was excited when they introduced Tyrese and then they did nothing with him.
Not sure what kind of twist to expect, I assume someone major dies, just don't think it'll be Rick, Daryl, Michone or Tyrese. Though maybe Rick does get killed off.
This prison stuff is as far as I know in the comics, but hopefully they go somewhere else because the prison stuff is getting boring.
I was glad to see Merle go. Interesting character i guess if you favor a sociopath. I thought his presence in the prison was toxic for everyone.
I liked the way his character was portrayed in his final episode going from the ruthless hateful Merle to someone that still had a glimmer of humanity left in him.
I was stunned he let Michonne go and relieved.
The only thing that was a let down is how the Governor just flat out dominated them in their battle that was BS. We are talking about a guy that cut off his own hand to surrive a roof top of zombies.
A lunitic that has a shiv bayonet for an arm.
The Governor should have been stuck at least a couple times from Merle's rage.
The writers are making the Governor like Jason escaping death all the time he is only missing the Goalie mask.

We are also talking about the Governor, who doesn't really give two shakes about anything right now. Merle was drunk after drinkinging half a 26 of whiskey and the Governor is fighting like he has nothing to lose.
Merle gets ambushed by a zombie and then gets ambushed by the Governor, so was it realistic to me that he got owned in that fight? Short answer is yes.
Also the zombies were never on the roof since they chained the door shut. He cut off his hand so he didn't die of exposure/dehydration on the roof.

Have to agree with Hockeyguy here - Merle seemed almost resigned to his fate on the way to try and take out the Governor and as many of his guys as he could. While he may have thought there was a chance he'd get away, when he was caught, beaten briefly by the guys who caught him & then had to fight the Governor following his already long day & having a few drinks in him, it was believable to me that he'd lose that one.
The Governor had his intense rage fuelling his strength in this fight as well - no doubt compiled by Andrea & Milton's betrayals never mind Michonne having re-killed Penny.

The zombies were going to get on the roof - there was a whole pack/herd of them in the stairwell banging against the door and it was only a matter of time until the chain holding them back gave. That's why he was so desperate to get away and cut his hand off - he'd have probably figured out a way to get out of the cuffs without chopping his hand off with more time, he was pretty resourceful.

well if you want to get picky the building that had the roof locked off was full of zombies. The point is dude cut off his own arm to survive.
As for the Governor of course he is going to beat Merle in the final fight but he also should have been stabbed and surrived his scrap with Merle. I would have preferred Merle shanked him in the nut sack.
