I know some of you hate black but its my favorite non color. I hope the new jersey is black personally. I dont actually like the retros at all. The red is kind of off for me and not something I like to wear.

I don't get the hate for black. I think it looks pretty good (Chicago, LA, Boston)

Leave the jersey prototype and the computer you used to create that jersey in the house, and light a small fire in the basement.
Drive away safely with your family and poccessions.

Black is as much a silly 90's gimmick as retros are now, started with Pittsburgh in the first Winter Classic. The Atlanta jerseys are far more abusive to the eye than the refined Flames late 80's and current retros. Plus if you want to go that route then what do you have to say about New Jersey failing to use Rockies blue?
And neither Vancouver's ugly blue/green surrender jerseys nor Edmonton's "relive the glorious 80's" jerseys look good. St. Louis doesn't wear their 80's style and the Islanders have a much better look today than in the 80's.

I'd say the resurgence of the retro look extends a lot further than just the NHL. Look how many teams in the 4 major N.A. sports that have gone back to their classic look. I love it.

Yeah that's because NYI went full retro for their jerseys and went back to their 70s look.
St. Louis has probably one of the ugliest jerseys in the NHL along with the Ducks, Flames, Stars and Nashville.

The Isles didn't go ugly until the 90 when they started experimenting with different color schemes, wavy lines for trim and the god awful captain highlinerr logo. The only difference between now and the 70s/80s is that the Isles have a brighter orange in their logo when before it was more of a red color and the blue is a bit brighter, they also have slightly altered the striping. So while its definitely retro and one of the best in the NHL imo, its not quite exactly the same as the 70s/80s, ctually I think their slight tweaks have made it better.

The striping is definitely the same as the 70s jersey, but maybe with updated colours. I'm actually not opposed to having a Flames uniform that's different than the Retro as long as a few guidelines are followed.
A) Remove black. It makes the jersey look horribly dark and adds an unnecessary 4th colour.
B) Keep the red and orange/yellow. Tweeking the shades of these is OK, but going too dark with the red and it looks like maroon. Maroon is too dark and makes the jersey look depressing. Also, the current shade of red has been around since the 70s (yes, all red Flames jerseys have been the exact same shade as has been discussed before) and it's almost a brand in and of itself. I wouldn't be opposed to tweeking the yellow though. Maybe a more gold colour along with blood red would look awesome.
C) Keep the striping pattern simple. I like the retro striping pattern and I honestly can't think of anything better. With that said, if the team decides to do something slightly different and it looks better, I would be all for it.
As has been mentioned before, some teams do make black look good, however, they all have something in common with each other that the Flames are lacking. Boston, Chicago, LA and New Jersey all use black as one of 3 colours. The Flames use it as one of 4. 4 colours makes the set look too busy, therefore, one of the colours needs to go. Red, yellow and white aren't going anywhere so it has to be black that disappears. With the current set, you can see that they tried to reduce the amount of yellow on the jersey to make it more aesthetically pleasing. Still, the three biggest problems with doing so is you are minimizing a classic Flames colour, your jersey still looks too busy and the team is now one of 5 teams with the same red and black colour palette. You loose the uniqueness of the Flames brand if the uniforms look similar to 20% of the other teams.

Yes, retro is everywhere now. And making teams look oh so sharp and old school awesome!
VERY happy the end or limited use of the Flames retros is coming. And black is here to stay. Forever. Deal with it.

The Flames current home/away set is unique among all 30 NHL teams. There is no copy or similarity. It was unique when they revealed it and still remains so today. It copies nothing of the other 29 teams. The only alteration needed is to remove/change the flag shoulder patches which were there to celebrate 100 years of Alberta hockey but that was 6 years ago now. However I do get asked all the time when traveling to watch the team about the flags and most find it very interesting.
You don't want to look like 20% of the rest of the league (which the current jerseys don't) but you want to copy 30% of the league and go full retro. Good job making your point

Dude
Black and Red:
Black and Red:
Black and Red:
Black and Red:
Black and Red:
To an extent also Black and Red (and blue):
Going retro would mean we would be the only red and yellow team in the NHL. Now proceed to shut the hell up and go away.
