It seams to me Detroit even had a long period of being terrible in the late 70's 80's before they started to draft guys like Yzerman and Lidstrom. I don't remember much fooling around with their uniforms.
How about... instead of wasting dollars figuring out ways to come up with a new jersey in a cash grab - invest more in time effort and money in winning. Nothing sells like winning. You can't divert my attention from the teams performance buy giving me something else to look at...and I like the retro's. Wish they would bring back the whites.

I fail to see how the marketing department is responsible for the on-ice product.

Where did I say the marketing department was responsible for the on ice product? Just win and the marketing will take care of itself.
Your missing my point. Keep the original colors, don't add any, slight tweaks for updates....focus on winning. Minimum effort on diverting the customer's attention with fancy new Jersey's. Maximum effort in icing winning product. Smaller marketing dept, more scouts.

this post is a rather gigantic fail and an almost criminal lack of understanding in business.

You guys are something else....
More sales = more revenue = more cash to invest back into the business = new products / refinement of existing products to be brought to market and advertised by the marketing dept in hopes to solicit more sales...rinse, repeat. Profit.
As a fan they are asking for my hard earned dollars in order to view their product or endorse through my support in purchasing/wearing jersey's, hats promotional items etc.
Neither answers the original question....has any teams like The Bruins, Canadians, Leafs, Red Wings, Black Hawks, Flyers...added colors to there basic scheme? I hope we don't and hope we get rid of the black.

On topic, what I'd like to see in a jersey concept would be the red flaming C, but on a red background so just the outline shows up. I'm thinking something very minimalist, almost like a practice jersey. Can any of you guys with the design templates oblige?

Yeah but black has always been in their color scheme...did they add a color that hasn't... say green for example or blue?

Gotcha. And no, none of the original 6 have strayed from their original colours since their introduction to the NHL (unless you count event jerseys like the Toronto St. Pats).
I don't know if comparing ourselves to the original 6 is the best comparison though (people do it often when referring to solid jersey designs) as they carry far more heritage than Calgary will ever have.
For example, as I can appreciate the heritage involved, I've never been a fan of Detroit's bland design or Montreal's waist band.
Also, as some have probably seen this year, the '67 Leaf's logo is the best looking logo they've worn. Far better than the 80's font and odd weighting the Leaf's logo of current is. The '67 is a far cleaner/timeless logo than what they wear now and substantially better than the busy original Maple Leaf travesty people seem to love.
So what I'm saying is, not all classic jerseys need to be the template of what we do going forward.
Calgary's '89 is beautiful and I'd love to see an updated rendition become our primaries. Not because 'X' team makes it work, but because we have a jersey that looks great in 2013. Black would be a great 3rd jersey colour and I'll always love that we rocked black for as long as we have. However, I find the white C to be much cleaner. Hell, white has become a more modern design colour of late as well, so this is a perfect time for us to embrace it. At the time we rocked black, it was fresh and modern. Today, a shift to white has happened (not just sports, but all design I work with).

If you consider the Atlanta years as part of our heritage, red and yellow has been around at least as long as St. Louis' blue and yellow, Philadelphia's orange and black, Vancouver's blue and green, NYI's and Edmonton's blue and orange.
That's just who the Flames are. Black was just a silly sales gimmick fad in the 90s.

Except Boston was Brown and Gold for their first 10 years as a NHL team, then they changed it to Black and Gold. So they did change their uniforms to use Black predominately on an uniform that previously had no black on it.

the Hawks added a black 3rd jersey, but Black was always a major part of their colour scheme

You forget the maple Leafs actually spent their 1st year in green/white rather than blue/white. they changed the colour to blue to (supposedly) match the Varcity Blues and Argos.

Thanks, did not know this. I have always thought the Bruins were always Black and Gold. I was aware of the Leafs but was willing to dismiss their time in Green as it was only 1 year.. or so I thought.

Okay, this is the first step in the jersey creating process. The next step is to pm the poster Soulchoice, as he gives discounted rates to CP members for creating jerseys.
Get him to create a prototype for you. When it is done, go pick it up and take it home. Then on your way home, rent a moving van. When you get there, get your family and all your personal belongings out of the house.
Leave the jersey prototype and the computer you used to create that jersey in the house, and light a small fire in the basement.
Drive away safely with your family and poccessions.

I just made that design because Blood Fetish wanted to see a red C on a red jersey. I am aware that it doesn't look very good.
